Guess so, I use this to export:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 of=boot.img bs=4096

Only imported through odin or cwm-zip package. This is what happens in zip-packages:
package_extract_file("boot.img", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p8");

Just wondering... why do you want this boot.img?
