Tried it, and failed.

SuperOneClick 2.3.1 - No Go
SuperOneClick 2.3.3 - No Go

SD Card Root doesn't work either because CWM can't mount the SD Card.

I'm no expert but it looks like Lenovo finaly did something about the internal/external SD Card partitioning. It does meen that with this firmware it is unable to root, or too use CWM. (log http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7879365/foto.JPG)

----

Edit, must getting sleepy... actualy CWM does work... and it CAN mount the internal SD... just used the wrong button within CWM. Anyway... Root with A1_Rooter.zip does work on the newest update. http://a1.cu2.at/A1_rooter.zip SuperOneClick no succes.
  • Put the zip file on your (internal) SD CArd
  • Just within CWM install zip from (Internal) SD card
  • Select A1_rooter
  • Voila

Hmm... I wonder if a regular OTA update is going to clobber root when the US version gets rolled out.

How are people updating to A107W0_A234_001_015_2643_ROW? CWM Recovory?...rename to update.zip and boot?

I am rooted with CWM installed. I tried update.zip to get to 2525...but it would hang before it started, so I used CWM Recovery. Everything was hosed and FC'ing until I did a factory reset, then things were OK.

I am hoping to avoid the factory reset step this time. The only nice thing about the way I did it last time was that I flashed CWM Recovory and Super User before I rebooted so I was rooted right away.

What I did was to rename the zip file to update.zip, copy it to the SD card and shut off the device. I then kept the Vol - button while powering up A1 and after the vibration I just released the power button (but not the Vol - button until I saw this green logo). Then the update was performed, I had to power A1 normally this time and after some minutes (taking longer than usual of course, it is the 1st boot!) I ended up in my original home screen!

I was really surprised to see that all of my apps and settings were kept intact after the update! I had made a backup of all user apps before the update but it seems that it wasn't needed...

Right now I am having issues rooting my A1 again, as the SuperOneClick 2.2. is stuck at Waiting for Device for 10 minutes...

As I pointed out above, SuperOneClick doesn't work with the new update, use the A1_Rooter.zip methode instead. Also mentioned above.

I promise I will not post or tweak my A1 before I get my morning cup of coffee! It seems that the combination of excitement and lack of caffeine led me straight to updating the A1 without paying attention to your (two!) messages mentioning that SuperOneClick will not work with this update... I apologize and thank you for pointing this out.

Since I have not installed CWM Recovery yet, I will have to be patient, wait until I leave the office and try this at home (both installing CWM and A1_Rooter.zip as you describe in your previous meesage).

Since were are in the process of receiving the source code for A1 in the next days, it seems strange that Lenovo attempted to prohibit the rooting of the device... unless this was caused unintentionally by other revisions included in the latest update.

Although the root exploit is useful to us to get full control over our own devices, it is still an exploit and could similarly be used by malicious software to gain control of the device. It's never a good idea to leave exploits unpatched for this reason. I'd go as far as saying that a vendor would be irresponsible to not fix exploitable bugs in new versions of their software.

For providing the device owner with full control over the device, it's better to have another channel with which to gain control - fortunately for us, we still have the installation of CWM using the standard recovery as an option.
