Is there a wifi file transfer app that can mostly or completely supplement the lack of usb mass storage?

if i understand what you mean.. There is no lack... just plug it and you have 16gb like you would if it have an SD card.

it also supports wifi-direct

I also use Dropbox... (linked in my signature)

Not sure what you're wanting to do over wifi that you can't over USB but you could use an app like Samba Filesharing https://market.android.com/details?i...XNoLnNhbWJhIl0. to access the phone over your network.
