Did that too, only I bought 2 gift cards instead of one. I've got twenty dollars to spend after Christmas, which makes for an easy/cheap stocking stuffer.

The only downside is that if I return the NT after buying it with gift certificates, they're supposed to give me store credit only.

For my money, it's still better to use an Amex -- because of the five-year Embedded Warranty that comes automatically with the purchase.
