If you wrote the Noogie image onto your NST, then you did in fact overwrite core files.
You're also not the first one to do this mistake.
- At this point your NST could have been easily fixed by booting the n2T-Recovery v0.2 image.

Why on earth would you do that? 
If you don't know what is going on, it sure aren't gonna help formatting parts of the internal flash.
- At this point your NST is much harder to repair, but maybe not entirely impossible.

How did you try to write it back? What tools? How big is your backup file?

Yes it would fail because you've deleted all the critical files needed to recover your NST.
Forgive me if I sound a bit harsh, I do no intend to, but you made things so much worse by starting to format things and I hope others who read this post and get into trouble later on remembers this and ask us for help before trying to fix it themselves
Check your PM in a few mins.
