Default Transformer Prime Audio Quality Discussion

Hey guys,

Like many others, I’m very excited for the release of the TF2, and have been scouring the Net since it’s announcement some time back. A search didn’t show an existing thread for this topic of discussion, so I’ve started one (please move if needed, Mods )

For those that (eventually) get the TF2, I would like to ask/discuss – what is the audio quality when listening to music through ear/headphones? Is the DAC able to drive high quality cans? The reviews online so far (Engadget, Verve, etc) only touches on sound through the speaker, which doesn’t answer my question.

The TF1 has the amazing Wolfson DAC, of which supercurio managed to "unlock" with his Voodoo kernel. I know the TF2 has a different DAC (a Realtek I think) so things are uncertain at the moment.

Please share your thoughts/opinions within this thread

Thanks!

I can definitely do this in a bit. I have some sennheiser RS160s that I really enjoy the audio quality of...they arent super audiophile material, but...

Lil money for nothing in FLAC coming up!

So i just plugged my cans in for the first time.

First, and don't let this scare you, but there is TERRIBLE hiss and static when the prime has no audio output. I don't know why. When the prime kicks off any sound, notification, music, youtube, anything, you can almost hear a "click" and the hiss goes completely silent right before the output starts.

EDIT: this may be feedback from my cans not having any audio input.

I've listened to some FLAC samples and some 320kbps mp3s that were converted from FLAC for my phone. So far i'm pretty impressed.

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing - FLAC
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - 320kbps MP3 from FLAC
Nickelback - Good times Gone (320kbps MP3)
Disturbed - Meaning of Life - 320kbps mp3 from FLAC
Loreena McKennit - Incantation - FLAC

I can't detect any flaws in the output. Dynamic range and detail i find to be at least on par with the capability of my RS160s...perhaps a slight "flatness" to mid-vocals, noticeable only with the loreena mckennitt track, upper range vocals are very crisp. Unfortunately i don't have any of my floorstanders wired up at the moment so that's about all the testing i can do.

I'll be curious to hear some impressions from someone with a better trained ear than myself.

Thanks. I was worried a little about the change because I heard Realtec sound chips several times and I have Realtec in my laptop and they sound really horrible (and I mean REALLY HORRIBLE, like an old radio) even if they state 100dB SNR in specification. I'll probably try connecting my USB sound card to transformer soon (just for fun), but it probably won't work.

Thanks a lot for your comments!

RS160s are wireless, right?
So that might explain the static!

It's actually Teg2 that had the Wolfson DAC. You might try looking for info on Teg3 to see if Nvidia's still using it. Or contact them and ask what DAC they're using in Teg3.

Correct, after some more use I think that's the culprit!

Using some Shure SE530 freebies from work. So far the audio quality has been good as long as the source material is up to par. Audio from streaming sources (google music) has been hit or miss.
