Grand Theft Auto 3 (GTA III) on the Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-i727
Grand Theft Auto III, confirmed to work on Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.
I purchased it for $4.99 a few minutes before midnight pacific time. I was a little bit worried that it would not be a supported device (none of the Samsung Galaxy S2 were listed as compatible devices, but it supported HTC Rezound which has the Snapdragon Adreno 220 combo that the Skyrocket has. The app itself was only a few megs but there was about 450MB to download before launching the game.
FYI, on your phone, you cannot find the game by searching "GTA". You have to find it by searching "grand theft auto". If you are on the market directly there are 3 releases by Rockstar:
Grand Theft Auto III (US version, this is the right one)
GTA III (Japanese Version?)
Grand Theft Auto 3 (German)
First impressions on performance.
The frames per second is good. Pretty much what you came to expect on the Skyrocket. Very smooth but when a lot of things are going on framerate might drop a little. When tons of stuff is happening, lag can lag a little bit but it won't be a show stopper.
First impressions on controls.
The controls seem aggressive when driving as though they've fast forwarded the game. I think I can adjust. The controls seem to work best when you are making quick taps to adjust rather than having to hold something down.
Audio
It seems that all the radio stations and licensed songs are there. It is not straightforward how to change radio stations, but you have to swipe left or right where it says the name of the radio station. That space itself is really small to be swiping but it is possible. I love the Chatterbox radio station. It is the work of genius and Lazlow hasn't been as funny in any of the following releases.
In conclusion
It seems like they delivered on every one of my expectations. It is the full game. The controls work. The performance on the Skyrocket is good enough to play through the entire game. I can't believe I will get to play my favorite game on a device I carry with me at all times. This is a total win in my book.
One last note. If you do end up on the map, you exit the map by tapping on the home icon at the bottom right of the screen.
