Default Curious about Kies

OK. Did a forum search and a Google search. I understand what Kies is but is it really necessary? Can connect via MTP now so no issue there. Did notice that latest firmware update fails (twice now) without kies. Will either kies or the update break root? (am doubting but am curious!)

thx

Kies is just syncing software and applying an update will remove root. All you have to do is reflash the root.zip file in recovery and then update the su binary using the superuser app and you are rooted again. Kies isn't necessary you could update manually, that is if you can find the update file somewhere to download to your sdcard, then run it as an update through recovery.
