I'm running AOKP M5 and Franco Milestone 3 on AT&T in South Texas. Could anybody recommend me a good radio?
Edit: Running on a GSM Nexus.
Why would you otherwise be in the GSM radio thread? :P
Seriously though. Just try any of the newer ones. I hear good things about UGLC1, which is a North American radio as well. In Europe XXKL1 serves me well.
Just try some. It comes at absolutely zero cost and switching radios is extremely quick.
Edit: For best results, make sure you are using a kernel (unlike stock AOKP M5 kernel) which doesn't have the data-lock bug, but includes the fixes from Google's recent updates. I have no idea about Franco's kernel but latest Trinity-kernel works for me.
The R is gone. It's back to 3G or HSPA. I noticed most of the time it's 3G (when the phone is on sleep with wifi turned off). As soon as the screen is back on, the icon changes to HSPA. Maybe it's to save battery.
Also, I didn't know this menu existed before, but your network/radio settings can be viewed this way:
- go to Phone
- *#*#4636#*#*
- then tap 'Phone information'
In this menu, you can see your actual signal strength, whether GSM and GPRS are on, as well as the network type the device is currently getting (UMTS is 3G, or HSPA). You can reset your radio too.
There's a setting thay may get you better network behaviour and battery:
Set preferred network type:
By default, the GN is set on 'GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)' - which means it scans for both. However, I recommend you tweak it.
- Fido and Rogers operate on GSM/HSPA only. So if you bought the device from Virgin/Bell, but are using a SIM card on Rogers or Fido, it's better to change the setting to 'GSM auto (PRL)'. There's no use to scan CDMA anyway.
- Virgin and Bell are CDMA/HSPA. For those networks, leave the preferred network type as 'GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)'.
- Same with Telus (they are CDMA/HSPA).
I think this is the reason why the 'R' problem has only affected Fido and Rogers users so far.
OK so I had a peek in my "service menu" and found out that my GSM GNex was on WCMDA preferred.
So I changed that setting to GSM auto PRL but that setting doesn't stick. Each time when I go back in the hidden service menu the setting is on WCMDA preferred again
How to permanently change that? I'm on the XXLA2 radio
I still have bad battery life, I even didn't use my GN!
In Samsung (Finland) they said flashing to other ROM that is illegal, WTF?
Nobody can't help me, in stores/samsunf (finland), they don't know nothing about Build version and the baseband version! they says that needs to do hard reset!
Anyone who have Finnish GN or Estonian GN, tell me please what is the stock ROM baseband and build version and if possible then the bootloader too!
Thanks!

Go to a phone store and play with a GNEX. Find out what ROM version and baseband they are using.
Technically flashing a ROM or replacement kernel is not illegal, but it DOES void your warranty. If you get it all back to stock, they won't know the difference, though.

I tried but nowhere is Gnex to check that out, tomorrow I'll go to Estonia and if i have time then I ask from some phone stores...

I flashed to ITL41F with bootloader: bootloader-maguro-primekl01 and baseband XXKK1..
Now it looks like I have better battery charging and maybe I have fixed my battery life (I'm not sure)..
Only that is bad ITL41F have update to 4.0.2 but not to 4.0.3/4.0.4, so Is there anybody who can update it to 4.0.4 unofficially...?
EDIT: this ROM: ITL41F and XXKK1 is on Finnish Galaxy Nexus GSM!
I changed bootloader so I have now much better battery charging but about battery life I don't know yet.. (Battery charges 80% faster)!!!!!

How can a bootloader affect battery charging? Just asking....

Bootloader has no effect on battery life. The task of boot loader is to start the operating system. It has no play after that. Bad radio can cause poor battery, but not a bootloader. A bad bootloader will not let you boot.
