One thing i've missed about Windows Mobile is the availability of 'Lite' ROMs. Back then, all the great chefs released a variety of 'Full' and 'Lite' ROMs with every new release.

On Android, i'd love to have stripped down ROMs that save me the trouble of removing components manually after every flash.

texasice, here's a start, a partial list (forgive me if any are not originally from /system/app). i'll test more soon:

works from /data/app:
Noisefield LWP
Phasebeam LWP
Holospiral LWP
Galaxy4 LWP

must be in /system/app:
Launcher2
Market (i think i tested this, but i'm not 100%)

i just installed from market and have in /data/app:

Music
Terminal Emulator (actually, i'm not sure how i got this working; the included apk didn't work initially either in /system/app or /data/app)
Maps
Street View
Google Plus

Default getting some space for Vending.apk

Code:
/system # ls media/ -l
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Dec 28 05:54 audio
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2642286 Aug 1 2008 bootanimation.zip
bootanimation.zip is a good choice. I completely removed it and while booting the phone I just get a nice blinking ANDROID with ICS font.

Okay, here's my list:

works from /data/app:
Calendar
CalendarProvider
Calculator
DeskClock
Noisefield LWP
Phasebeam LWP
Holospiral LWP
Galaxy4 LWP
Gmail (!)
Google Plus
Maps
Mms
Music
Music2 (but why needed alongside the ICS Music?)

partially works from /data/app? i would leave in /system/app:

Gallery2 (does not have full functionality in /data/app; top menu bar is rendered differently)

must be in /system/app:

Email
Exchange
GenieWidget
GoogleQuickSearchBox
Launcher2
LiveWallpapers
QuickSearchBox (but why have this and GoogleQuickSearchBox?)
Talk
Vending
VideoEditor
VisualizationWallpapers
Youtube

(the others in /system/app i didn't try because i strongly suspected they would not work outside of /system/app and i need to get to bed for the day and need my phone working.)

beats me:

Development
MusicFX
Stk

you can move bootanimation.zip from /system/media to /data/local to save space in /system.

i like the stock boot for ease of use switching back and forth between other roms, im on the road a lot and cant plug my phone in to be able to repartition when i want to switch. i cant recall the last time i actually plugged my phone in to a computer, i use wifi explorer and adb wireless widget if i want to push something.

i did however put the following apps back in the system partition cause i noticed they were missing...and i think there were a couple others...
VoiceDialer
Calendar
CalendarProvider
Email
Exchange
QuickSearchBox

Galaxy Nexus GSM

Nexus One - Android 4.0.4 Texasice Evervolv-Perdo-2.1.0p11) - hboot(BlackRose) - data2ext class6 SD(data2whatever)

Moto Xoom AOSP(built by razorbladex401)

Running miniskirt 2.1p2 with Link2SD: installed Email, Exchange, Calendar and CalendarProvider in /data/app (actually with l2sd - that would be sdext; and all seem to be working fine)

Note that for Calendar, events werent showing up - but clearing data for Calendar and Calendar storage fixed that.

Default Sim card not detected

Hi,

on 2.1p3 - after login, network selection happens automatically - but once in a while, after login, the lock screen shows NO SIM CARD. when this happens, then after a few minutes, the phone connects to the mobile network - but going to launcher screen, there's a "SIM card added" popup that says the phone must be restarted for the SIM card to take effect.

Are others getting this too?
