Default [Q] help wont update

hi just got a nexus s 200 quid from carphone warehouse. 2 problems thinking of returning tomorrow. 1 is wont update stuck on 2.3.1 says its up ro date and when i use the gps outside my mobile connection to internet seems to turn off and only comes back on after reboot any help would be appreciated

Root the phone.. install CWM recovery and manually update

You don't need CWM to update, you can use the stock recovery as long as the update is official Google signed from here [REF] ALL Nexus S OTA Updates for ALL Variants, Plus Full ROM Packages

tried just get blank screen on recovery doing my head in love the phone other wise and gps issue gone now no idea what that was

going back exchanging it samsung said that its a recovery problem
