Default Gloves that work with capacity touch screen.

There are in general two types of gloves that work with capacity touch screen. The first type is those that have openings in the finger tips... and the second type is those with some special lining in the finger tips that make it work.

The North Face has a few pairs of gloves with what they called "E Tip" technology that works with capacity touch screen. I bought this pair last year and they work pretty well with touch screen

But living in Chicago, this pair isn't warm enough. I notice that they also have a much thicker pair of gloves with e-tip:

I'm thinking about buying this pair, but would like to hear other opinions to see if there is other alternative to North Face. Any suggestion? I want something that is super warm, wind/water resistant, and can stand up to snowy weather in Chicago. Do you know if any other winter gear manufacturers make something similar?

Have you considered modifying existing gloves? Amazon has a 12x13" swatch of conductive fabric (ASIN B004G4ZLRI) which can convert your existing gloves. At $20 it's much cheaper, and other even cheaper alternatives may be out there as well, but it does mean using some sewing skills.

I need a new pair of heavy duty gloves anyway, lost mine on the train a while ago. And my sewing skill is rather bad, would probably end up with a pair of frankensteined gloves if I did that.

Yes, that almost makes it worth getting married

Thanks for the links to the North Face gloves, I've only seen the knitted ones prior to this. I've got a pair similar to the heavier ones sans the conductive fingertip and they do work well in MA for shoveling duties. However based on my experience with stylus accuracy and seeing how big the pads are I would imagine you'd only have a very gross amount of control with them. Still, if it's enough to fumble around with the Pandora widget via WidgetLocker that may be enough.

A quick search did turn up an alternative in GloveTips which look promising in that they don't seem to need sewing skills but, more importantly, seem like they'd provide finer control.

Either way, please update this thread with whatever you decide. Winter is here and I may have to steal whatever solution you end up with if you like it.

Thanks. I've taken a look at GloveTips on their website. While a small dot of conductive material may increase accuracy, it may not be as convenient as the North Face one. I have the first pair of e-tip gloves that I posted above. The conductive materials on the finger tips have a rather large surface, making gestures like pinch to zoom pretty easy to perform. I don't think I will do a lot of texting with the gloves on, so I think the thicker North Face one would be good enough for me to do simple stuff like on screen music control, answering phone, checking email etc.

Their thickness seems similar to the first pair of NF that I posted, which isn't enough for Chicago's winter

I actually use them for driving or when i go shopping. Of course they arent that warm to take a walk at -40 like we have here in Ottawa but for driving excellent.

I mainly want to be able to answer call and press big on screen buttons (like music control, or unlocking lock screen pattern) without having to take the gloves off when I'm outdoor. It's obvious that you won't be able to text a lot with them. I used to have a pair of North Face Montana gloves that is of similar thickness and materials so I have a pretty good idea of how flexible these gloves are.
