AT&T Employees: Question on the $100 new line promo
So there's the reatilmenote $100 off but it only works on new accounts or adding a line to existing accounts. On my current account I have two lines both off contract. Could I create a new line and carry over my existing number and then cancel the existing off-contract one?

no, you would have to cancel your old number and keep the new number... also that discount doesn't usually work if you have what is called a FAN on your account, giving you a monthly company discount.

Is this only applicable if you order directly from ATT? I pre-ordered (did the add a line) from Best Buy for the $50 rebate plus the free case. I'm assuming I cannot get this discount?

could you not "port" the old number to the new line/ thus cancelling the old line in the process?

OK thanks.
Since you are form ATT, can you confirm a few things that support told me?
1. I have the unlimited grandfathered data plan. Will I be able to transfer this to my Note? I was told yes.
2. This is a bit more convoluted but I'll try to explain. Currently I have 2 phones (an HTC Inspire which is what I am replacing plus an iPhone 4s) on a family plan, none of which are eligible for an upgrade. They're both smartphones with data plans. This is what the ATT rep. told me to do to get the best deal since I can't upgrade:
a. Add a line and buy the Galaxy Note, which requires me to choose a data plan for it.
b. When I activate the Note, have the phone number and unlimited data plan from my HTC Inspire transferred to the Galaxy Note.
c. Take the new line I added, and apply it to an old "dumbphone" that I own, which allows me to drop the new data plan I added.
This leaves me with 3 phone numbers but only 2 data plans. I was told that data plans are not part of the 2 year contract, it's just a requirement of having a smartphone. So if this works, my total additional monthly expenditure is the $9.99 for the new line - again no data cost since it's associated with a dumbphone.
I hope that makes sense. This idea was from someone at ATT customer service, so I assume it's legit. My only concern is that since I have to activate it at Best Buy, they will screw it up and won't be able to drop the data plan or screw up transferring my unlimited data plan to the Note.
Thanks for your help.

if he was switching carriers yes, but he already has at&t. you can't port a number to the same carrier.

Yes, this is true, yes this will work, but many reps at least in a corporate store will not do this. You will have to get customer care to do it for you. You are signing a 2 year contract for a phone knowing it requires a 2 year data plan. While it is true if you switch to a phone that does not support data that it can be removed but not many reps will do it, especially if it is right away after getting the new phone which required it. However, since you are getting it at best buy, they prob won't care and will just do it for you.

So if this works, my total additional monthly expenditure is the $9.99 for the new line - again no data cost since it's associated with a dumbphone. Yes, if you get the data plan removed, you will need an IMEI number off your basic phone to do so.
I hope that makes sense. This idea was from someone at ATT customer service, so I assume it's legit. My only concern is that since I have to activate it at Best Buy, they will screw it up and won't be able to drop the data plan or screw up transferring my unlimited data plan to the Note. Best buy will activate it on the new number, leave it there then go to at&t store and have them swap it, or call at&t customer care to swap it because then you don't have to worry about a mistake. Also your current phone number you are planning to use the note on will need a new LTE sim card, if you haven't gotten a new SIM in the last year or so then it prob isn't an LTE SIM. Your note cannot even be switched to your old number until the SIM is updated, the system will not allow it. It will just flag errors on your account and put a data block on your line until you do.
Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the thorough reply AEDan!
With regards to your comments about the SIM, I assume the Note will come with one right? were you just saying that so that I wouldn't take the SIM out of my Inspire and put it in the Note and then wonder why it didn't work? I got my current SIM 1 year ago so I'll just use whatever comes with the Note.
I will do what you say and call customer care and have them move all the numbers around. that way I don't have to mess with Best Buy making a mistake and potentially losing my unlimited data plan or something.
Thanks again!

Got it, thank you! Guess I'll either have to go Best Buy or keep crossing my fingers on Amazon Wireless if I want to save any money . . . kind of peeved they've not mentioned it all! I've called a few times and they just keep telling me that if it's not on the website then they don't know anything

Yes, but you will most likely still need another SIM, because the SIM that comes with the note will be assigned to whatever number is added to your account by adding a line like you are doing. You can not reassign a sim to another number. Basically that new sim that comes with the note will go in your "dumbphone" on the second line, you will need another new LTE sim for your current number you are putting the note on unless you already have a LTE sim.

These pictures are what the LTE sims look like, with the halved colors on the bottom. Some of them are completely halved colored without the white bar on the top, depends on which of the sim card brands you have as they used a few different suppliers. Easiest way to spot them as well as they don't say at&t on them, they just show the globe. LTE SIMs are backwards compatible will all other phones.
