I don't know if this is related
Your TouchPad is constantly syncing with Google, Gmail, your other email servers and any other apps that communicate with their servers. So no doubt you are going to see activity just about all the time. If you are not using wifi, turn it off and save battery power.

I've got a quick question.. I understand that android, by default, is unable to detect and use adhoc networks. However after doing some googling, there were patches released for froyo by some xda communities to enable usage of adhoc networks.

I'm curious if there are similar things, patches or whatever that I can do to allow my touchpad to use adhoc wifi networks?

Also, I seem to have pretty good wifi, no issues at all with CM9 Alpha 2.

So my wifi issue seems to be that it can see all APs but cannot connect. Multiple reboots never fixed it. Tried turning wifi on in airplane mode and it worked!

What type of error or do you get when your able to see the AP but can't connect. If you don't see a clear visible reason/error. Try using lumberjack from the market it will allow you to watch your logcat, event radio etc at the same time. Also for anyone that doesn't want to go into terminal its a easy gui. For me I have been getting excellent connections using 5ghz and ill have to look into this further but have yet to had a forced loss of connection on that spectrum. Most likely an anomaly.

So you think that just not activating your Google account is going to stop the numerous apps that come installed in Android from pinging the web for information? There is a lot more going on besides your Google account. When you have wifi turned on that means it is using battery power because the wifi radio is transmitting to the AP and receiving information from the AP. Do you have a laptop? Watch the wifi activity on that sometime. It's busy all the time. I did notice that the CM team did change the wifi symbol and the way it behaves in CM9. CM7 did not have the little activity indicator like CM9 has. That is probably why you think you are seeing something more happening when it has been happening all along.

This has worked for me to fix the CM9 wi-fi issues on 3 different touchpads so far. Its the best fix out there.

Thanks. I agree man, I flash it right after flashing a nightly, every time. I've only had one hiccup with it since I've been using it. (weeks now).
