Default When the ics upgrade comes

Hi

My question is this, if we have root on the tablet and lenovo release the ics upgrade will we still be able to use rootkeeper? I ask this because reading around upgrading to ics seems like its going to be a matter of copying a load of apk's I am very used to windows and an upgrade of that would sometimes keep all the settings and some times give you a fresh install.

If the root backup is kept in the system xbin folder will that get erased when the upgrade comes out?

Cheers

Tom

Ics is completely different then hc, so don't think current root is kept, all files will change.

Once you have root it is basically always possible to upgrade and keep root. OTA Rootkeeper specifically may not work because it keeps an su-backup file on your /system partition so any update that completely formats /system will delete the backup and prevent re-rooting. The ICS update may be such an update since it is a whole new OS version rather than a small incremental update with patches and bug fixes. However, with root and CWM recovery you can install modified update.zip files not signed by Lenovo. All it takes is someone to modify the update.zip to keep root or install root with the update. I did a crappy hack job on the last update to flash it in CWM Recovery with root but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will put one together for ICS. If not I'll throw one together again and hopefully it will be better this time around as I learned a thing or two doing the first one.

Thanks very much for this, I am just about to get an sd card so will hopefully get cwm soon, so I can get a full backup, lets hope we can qweek the update script as I tend to prefer stock rooted roms.

Cheers

I am very thankful for the "crappy hack job" you did on the last update, and will happily accept any other hacks you are generous enough to provide.

Thanks again for all your help. My TPT has never run so smoothly.

You can also just choose to skip any future OTA from lenovo. The CM9 port is already in the works. When the official update and source (please...) are released, the TPT specific binaries will only make that port (and any other rom) better. In fact, maybe those devs are already ahead of the game.
