iboy you won't find those files "in" those partitions. Essentially the files "are" the partitions so amss.bin == mmcblk0p13 and mdm.bin == mmcblk0p17.
The dd command in solution 2 creates a disk image of the partition and outputs it as the respective file (mdm.bin or amss.bin). That is how we create the backup of the partitions (really they are disk images)
Later solution 2 asks you to copy the disk image (mdm.bin) back to mmcblk0p17.
You can mount the partitions and look at the files inside them which is what I am doing now.
Really though solution 1 should at least get you on the same page as the rest of us. But try either one and let me know how it goes.
