DONATE TO ME
Question [Q]Don't know where to next

I'm new to WP7 devices. I just bought an HTC Surround from eBay and it seems to be in some kind of bricked or semi bricked state. It used to be in an eternal reboot cycle but i managedd to fix that by some how (miraculously?) formatting the internal SDHC card. Now the device doesn't rebbot like it used to but insted turns on and stops at the connect to computer screen. I have tried syncing with Zune but got the 10100 error saying that there wasn't any backup. What do I do? Do I have to reflash the stock? If so which one and where is it? I have posted which mode the Surround ends up in and the tri-color screen for the SPL version if it is needed for the ROM. Thanks!Click image for larger version

if you are to this point then you are doing good. If you are on Windows Vista/7 makes sure that (while in USB SPL mode) you get the latest HTC USB Sync drivers from Windows Update.

Once that is done download this:

http://www.filefactory.com/file/b48f...50_RELEASE.exe

(yeah it will take a while but just wait)

once you get that, put the phone in USB SPL mode if it isn't already. Run the exe you downloaded above. It will flash the phone with a very stock ROM (like pre NoDo I think). After that, use Zune to update all the way to Mango.

(I just performed this two days ago so I can verify it works).

Ok so i have flashed the rom already. But, how long is it supposed to stay at the HTC screen? It seems to be as if it were stuck or something.

hrm. I'm beginning to think you have a defective SD card if it is hanging there. After I flashed it just came up and worked fine. If you go that route just go big and get a 32Gb SanDisk card. It is VERY important you get a SanDisk card, in fact, get this specific one:

You can search youtube for videos on how to replace it, but its not that hard.

Thanks! Just as you said it was the dumb SDHC card. I have been reading somewhere else here on XDA that quite a number of Wp7 phones have this same problem too, some cards aren't just fast enough despite their class. Sure enough I removed the card and finally it booted up. I'm checking the card out so far and it seems pretty slow to me for a class 2, what a bummer. Oh well looks like I'll have to spend some more. I was expecting to resell this thing. :(

if you go big and put a 32 in it you should be able to sell it well.

i'm curious, i've never taken mine apart, is it hard to pull the card?

Not so much, at least for me. All you have to do is pretty much remove the backing of the surround and click he card out of the slot that is next to the SIM slot. What makes it hard is removing the back case because it in two parts but an iPhone opening tool makes it easier to open it.

this is good to know, I might start picking up ones with bad cards and upgrading them to sell.

Damn, this isn't good. After looking closely turns out that the PCB that holds both thebSIM and microSD slots is missing some resistor/fuse thingies. I tried to bridge them but somehow it still doesn't work with any card at all. This fixing thing is starting to suck. I tried googling for the part but I just can't find it. If you know of where to buy it or maybe have a spare one that would be great. I'll post some pictures later of how the part looks like.

[EDIT] I have uploaded some pictures and highlited where the resistors are missing.

before diving into parts I'd get an SD card and try it first...not sure what you think is missing is actually missing. if you are convinced then I'd just go have it fixed at a repair shop.
