i dont know,i am not a dev and i have say it a lot of times!i dont have any knowledge on this.BUT this is a fact for our phone:at least for now, recovery cant flash kernels.if there is a kernel inside a zip rom,it doesnt flash even it dont give error mesage.i dont talking in air.i have make many tests.i attempt flashing kernels(with different names so i can see if it flashed or not) and never could flash with recovery.if you flash with odin its flashing succesfully.all the phones are not the same.maybe our have something different going on.i always talking for facts after testings not by my mind.
and something alse:i think skins recovery havent command to mount boot partition.maybe this is the problem?its flashing boot.img in the air?

I agree with termagazis. I did my own experiments with my unfinished custom rom and incorporated init.d support as well by patching the init.rc with a busybox run-parts statement. Test included a simple script which creates a file on /data/local/temp. The file was created only after flashing my tar'ed boot.img with odin.

There has to be a way to flash a boot.img thru cwm which warrants discovery sooner or later. However let us all focus on the bigger picture here. A kernel with ext4 support is at hand we just need we need to figure out how to convert the rfs device blocks into ext4.
