BACKUP

Before you continue, you may want to make a backup of your device for in case something goes wrong. You can do this with the update tools, but I use a separate tool to have more control over the backup-process. This is what I do to make a backup:

1. Download CabSender
   It is from xboxmod's WP7 Update Cab Sender thread.
2. Use Zune 4.8 final (4.8.2345.0).

   Even though your phone says you still can't disconnect, you can safely disconnect the phone and it will restart.

INSTALL WP7 UPDATE TOOLS

1. First make sure you have Zune 4.8 final (build 4.8.2345.0)
2. Download the WP7_update_tool.rar and install the UpdateWP package for your platform (x86 or x64). This is version 4.8.2134.0.
3. Download the WP7 Update Cab Sender.zip from xboxmod and extract it. This also contains a patched version of UpdateWP.exe which will work with Zune 4.8 final.

INSTALL THE UPDATE PACKAGES

1. Copy all the CAB files you downloaded to the folder where you extracted xboxmod's WP7 Update Cab Sender. The CAB's should be in the same folder as the BAT-file.
2. Run the batch-file and press 'S'.
3. Your device will reboot and start in download-mode.
4. You'll see progress on the screen of your desktop, but it may take more than 10 minutes before your WP7 device is starting to show a progress-bar, even for small updates. That's normal, because the device is scanning for installed packages and performing merges.
5. When the update is ready, your device will be rebooted again and it will boot Windows Phone with new version and or custom packages.

I'm glad you deceided to go with the default theme in this new release. Seems like I finally found the ROM I'll be using.

I don't know how much patience you have, but I never did this on WP (kinda nervous), so I'd like to ask a few questions:

1) what does this mean:
"this "new rom will be image updatble but you need to flash it first"

Does this mean that when soon a new build comes out, I'm gonna have to flash again? Or will I be able to simply send the update file (or whatever it's called, image?) to the phone?

2) Is there, or is there not a way to backup my app/games data? many guides say there is not, but than there is this thread here about some backup application. So I'm confused.

3) what is the CSC file?

4) To be able to flash this ROM, all I need to do is install magldr? Or are there some other things I should watch out for? What about firmware? I had that samsung update (firmware or bootloader, I'm not sure) that made it so that I am unable to windowbreak my phone in the future,if I ever need it again.
Do I need to downgrade this firmware/bootloader (I'm really not sure which one of those is in question) first, to be able to flash this ROM?

this means that you do not need to flash a new rom after an update appears.

All in all, great news! (except for the backup).

By tomorrow makretplace should be opened in Croatia, and by evening I should have this ROM up and running. I'll get back with impressions and reports and all that.
