Default [REF] Start up guide for rooting, recovery, ROMs, de-brick, and tether updated 05/23

I made this for myself last night for reference. Some info are redundant from appdroid's stickied post. It's meant to be concise but not all-encompassing. Hope it will be helpful to others. Of course all credits go to the devs who made this possible.

From Stock Galaxy Note

Part 1: Rooting and Clockworkmod

1. Install USB Driver for Windows (http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ow...SGH-I717ZBAATT).
2. In order to Odin you have to put your phone into download mode. To do so, turn off your phone, hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons, once you see the prompt
to put your phone into download mode press VOLUME UP.
3. To get Odin to work, start Odin and load the .tar, etc BEFORE plugging in your phone. Then put your phone into download mode and connect the USB. Once you plug in your phone the program will show device in COM port.
4. Root your phone. Two methods.
a. Flash counter raising: see here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1504218)
b. Flash counter intact: see here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1518962)
5. Clockworkmod recovery
a. Non-touch version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1526431
b. Touch version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1584576
6. To put your phone into recovery.
a. Turn off your phone, hold both VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN and POWER. After you feel the first vibration, let go of the POWER button but keep holding the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN. You should go into CWM assume itís flashed correctly.
7. First thing you do after installing CWM is to create a nandroid backup before you try to flash anything so you can restore if anything goes wrong.
8. Also you should check the md5sum of the rom, kernel, theme, etc file size before you flash to verify that downloaded file is correct and complete. To do that you can use any md5sum apps from the market such as this one. Some devs don't post md5sum info, so you have to ask for it.
9.Why clear cache, dalvik cache, and wipe data/factory reset before flashing a new rom?
a. cache: main data cache is used by the Android OS at runtime to write temporary files for specific reasons. You want to clear this out when you try a new ROM so it doesn't re-used that cached data.
b. dalvik cache: when you install an application on Android, it performs some modifications and optimizations on that application's dex file. It then caches the resulting odex (optimized dex) file in the /data/dalvik-cache folder, so that it doesn't have to perform the optimization process every time it loads an application. This is important if you flash a new kernel.
c. As a general rule you do all of above when flashing a new rom.

Part 2: Roms

1. Gingerbread Roms
a. Stock Odin ROMs for all carriers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1506330
b. Saurom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1522942

d. The Unofficial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1571940
e. TPC Note: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1509855
f. The-Unofficial 1.5 - Emily's Dedication: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1571940

2. ICS Roms (UCLC5 Based leaks) - read carefully before flashing any ICS rom from GB rom. You may not be able to just flash CWM.
a. DaGr8ís ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1581065
b. Odin Leak which will format/wipe your internal storage so back it up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1578850
c. Collective ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=501
d. TEAM PERFECTION - REVAMPING Skyrocket port by smartguy (need to have existing ICS rom and flash through CWM, so don't flash directly from GB based roms): http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1593023
e. NoteWorthy http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1606413
f. Seraphim http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1602632

j. OnlyOne Beta 2 - UCLE2 *SGS III TW* *SVoice* - Stock, Rooted, Deodexed http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1669170

3. AOKP/CM9 Roms
a. team insomnia's juggernaut http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1670256
b. h0tw1r3's CM9 R0 "unofficial" http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1661772
c. TEAM PERFECTION PRESENTS "UNOFFICIAL AOKP" http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1664577

Part 3: Kernels (Gingerbread only)

1. Da_Gís dagkernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1504920
2. Hololightís holoNote kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1554540

Part 4: Reset flash counter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1569206

Part 5: De-brick
1. First thing you should do is to try access CWM recovery (see above), then either restore a previous nandroid backup you made, flash a working rom that's on your sdcard, or put a working rom on your sdcard via your PC 's card reader and flash.
2. If you can't fix it via recovery, then put your phone into download mode. Flash a stock rom via Odin (see above)
3. If your Note won't turn on at all, you may be facing a hard brick.
4. You can also purchase a mini-usb jig which will put your phone into download mode even when above methods fail. I personally bought this one for $1.60 shipped. But basically any jig for the Galaxy phones should work.

Part 6: Enable Tether
1. Use Titanium Backup, and freeze or uninstall TetheringManager.apk in /system/app.
2. Then use any wifi tether app from the market.
3. Please note this is all done for you in most custom roms, so check your rom before this. You can always check see if TetheringManager.apk is there first.

Added it in OP. I'm trying to make this as concise and easy to use as possible. Left all the themes and mods out.

I'm able to flash it back to ICS now. I don't know what I did wrong.

Reinstalling apps.

I'm new to rooting samsung as well and so odin was new as well.

OP, you might want to add more info on CWM.
Backup, clear cache, clear dalvik, factory reset, flash zip from sd
You might also want to mention ics roms will clear internal sd card.

Haha i hear ya there! I came from Motorola; was easy as hell and no worries about the flash counter. On the Motorola boot logo when you would unlock the bootloader it would display small text at the top stating "unlocked." I was still able to return the phone with no issues. Are Samsungs different? Will the deny warranty if the flash counter is tripped?

One more thing op. It really should be mentioned about checking the md5. I know I'm lazy a lot of times but it really is important especially to someone new to this. They should feel more comfortable that the huge file they downloaded and are about to flash is still intact and not corrupted.
