I'm completely new to all this.

Yeah, devices have a current draw, which right now on the KF seems to be really low. (Can we get an official spec on it??) I've only been able to power a very small, low power (i.e. amperage rating) keyboard. USB 2.0 devices (without an additional hub) are a no-go. There's been some mumbling that the kernel is being over-protective on this issue (i.e. assuming it can't power something when actually it probably could, based on a conservative safety margin.) Be patient everyone ...

Having an official spec on the USB current would be good so we could know if we really are going to be stuck here or if maybe the kernel is being too conservative. But since Amazon didn't actually intend to host devices, I'd imagine it's possible this area of the device is really skimped out on. The fact it can even power devices is probably a grace of the OMAP board (or possibly Amazon toyed with the idea at some point.)

So I tried playing some .mkv files yesterday (720p) on MXPlayer, the result being that playback got pretty laggy/desynced with the audio, and the player defaulted to "SW" mode; I did try changing it to HW decoding but couldn't since the option was disabled and it said "hardware decoder (Not Available)" on the selection pop up.
  1. Is this ok? I kind of expected those vids to work right away with this kernel.
  2. If it's ok, I'm guessing I'll need to reencode the videos. Any pointers on how/what new parameters I should reencode them with?

Thanks in advance

I get the same thing on my Fire. Try BSPlayer, it uses it's own playback engine and can play MKV files with hardware acceleration.

I don't believe the Fire has the correct hardware to allow HDMI out via an MHL adapter.

Default Is that a real question?

No. The Kindle Fire doesn't have an HDMI port, and you can't just run HDMI through USB. It doesn't work like that. Even if it did, I doubt the Fire on its own could handle the necessary emulation, which is why most USB-HDMI adapters have external boxes to handle the processing.

Otg isn't working at mine it detects it but light won't flash bluetooth adapter doesn't work too but i can wait. Just a little question is it possible to mod this rom/kernel to get 3g via usb modem ?
