Ok I see where your going with the better materials = better look/feel.. but what does that do for weight? Heat? (how hot it feels in your hand)
And yeah, the One X looks/feels pretty much like a plastic Sammy phone to me. I don't have a problem with any of them. (the Note, thats the only one I couldn't do)
the international SGS2 and the GNex feel great in hand, not like plastic toys at all. GNex has a little more weight to it than the SGS2, but the SGS2 was just so sleek and sexy. i couldn't imagine an aluminum body on either tbh. i'm more interested in the unibody design of the One X than anything else. don't really care what the material is made out of. the last phone i dropped was an iPhone 3GS which was some time ago for me, and even then it was in a case so no harm to the phone.
That's the thing. Many of the more recent HTC phones (and tablets too) have not been plastic, but aluminum unibody, or some mix of aluminum and soft-touch plastic, etc. Much sturdier feeling, and sleeker looking. So its a disappointment to see the plastic body of the Vivid, and now the polycarbonate One X. I personally haven't held a One X/XL in hand yet. So hopefully it feels more high quality and sturdy than Sammy, LG and Moto phones. They just feel like cheap plastic junk to me.
Its still feels like plastic... but it has a "cool" feel to it and the quality feels better. Sammy kinda feels like a toy from the 99 cent store. This has the feel of a plastic high end power tool with smooth edges.
I've had my upgrade on my bold 9700 available since August of last year. I wasn't wow'd by Iphone 4s, I wanted the Nexus but it only went to Verizon, the Galaxy S2 (all varients) seemed like a bad 2 yr commitment, so I've arrived with the HTC One X. It's great looking and I specs that I expect to keep me happy and relevent for my 2yr contract. If the Galaxy 3 came out first on Att, I'd prolly have bought that.
Yeah Im lost on this build quality aspect as well, although I thought the metal battery cover with the sliding bottom piece on the captivate was pretty nice.
Edit: Im guessing you feel move secure about dropping the phone
I'm referring to more likely to have phone problems. Used to work in the mobile phone industry and it was well known that HTC are typically superior. Ymmv
Of course everyone has their own opinions but I'm also going off all the issues customers would come in with.
(Samsung tvs are a whole different ball game)
The metal sliding door made the phone heavier and wore out over time. (which got extremely annoying). really prefer the infuses snap off backing.

This is what i don't get though, why not wait and see if Sammy reveals the release date at that event on the 3rd? If i knew for sure the S3 wouldn't be out until August or September i'd preorder the one XL right now. As it is, i don't see the point in pulling the trigger because i'm sure i will be able to snag a one XL the week of release w/o a preorder.
Im debating on preordering mine right now as well but only because its a 2 day difference in which im sure i will be fine getting it on the 6th versus the 4th. Although the deadline to preorder and receive by the 4th is the 2nd.

+1 I agree here. I think the GNex feels awesome. That's why I stopped using cases, and switched to Ghost Armor.
I would say AT&T is to blame for the slow updates, the international versions get updated fairly quickly. Sides, aren't you flashing roms anyway?

This.
The U.S. carriers, in all their wisdom, have the manufacturers make stupid h/w and s/w changes to their all devices. Look at what Sprint's doing to the minimalist design of the One XL. If you look at the i9000 threads vs. the U.S. mutants there weren't nearly the number of issues and s/w updates were plentiful.
The biggest reason for importing a phone is to avoid carrier molestation and get support (and s/w) directly from the manufacturer (if you don't root & ROM).
