Network Problems after upgrading to ICS
In summary I have upgraded to ICS (Official), but am unable to connect to my carrier network and some of the OS seems missing; If I long press my power button I don't get the device menu, it just turns off.
Full details:
I am on a South African network, and the ROM shipped with my device is I9100XWKI4_I9100OJCKI1_XFA. I downloaded two variants of the new ICS ROM from
link;XWLP7 & XXLPQ and I downloaded the latest Odin.
From there I followed these instructions:
- Extract the firmware
- Open the included Odin
- Put your device in Recovery MODE (Home + Volume up + Power)
- Wipe Data/Factory reset
- Wipe Cache
- Take Out Your battery & put it back in
- Put your device into Download MODE (Home + Volume Down + Power)
- Click PDA and select *.tar.md5
- Then finally click START!
On both ROMs, following the PASS message my phone rebooted, and everything starts up perfectly; Applications get installed and so on. Only one big problem, I can not connect to a carrier network (The OS also never prompts me to unlock my SIM card). When I bring down my network menu (swipe down) it says Emergency Calls Only. I then figured I would try and manually select a carrier network, so I went and scanned for networks and selected Vodacom. I then get an error message saying "Error cannot connect". I also don't seem to have access to the menu one gets when holding down the power button, if I hold it down the device shuts down; no silent, power off, etc menu.
This happens with both of the rom variants I have. After trying everything in my limited knowledge I gave up, found and downloaded the old I9100XWKI4_I9100OJCKI1_XFA rom. I am now back on that rom and everything is working fine.
I have also tried following these steps:

Except I restore factory settings and wipe cache before deploying the ROM. I then sought the help of a fellow Droid user from the South African forums, who suggested that I flash onto the old Dutch firmware (GT-I9100_XEN_I9100XWKJ3_I9100XENKJ1_I9100XXKI4). After confirming it worked and I could get onto the network, I took the SIM out and did a proper firmware upgrade via KIES. The upgrade went in without any issue, BUT after the upgrade the problem was still there; no carrier network, no power button menu.
After further fiddling I figured that the OS not asking for my SIM PIN must be one of the causes of my issue, so I went to my settings and turned SIM security off and on. After doing so, suddenly the device hopped onto my carrier network. This did not solve the issue though, as I have to do this after every reboot.
I have checked to ensure my IMEI number is fine, and it is 100%. When I flashed to the XEO version, I could get into the *#272* menu and change my CSC. After doing so, problem was still there.
I am now totally confused as to what on earth could be causing the issue, especially considering other people on the same device with the same carrier seem to be able to flash without hassle - does anyone have any suggestions, or ideas? Come on XDA!
