I have tried the following and various combinations there off:

Install DoomKernel
Copy DoomKernel boot img to flashtool parent folder (C:\Flashtool)
Open Flash tool.
Shut down phone and connect it to the PC while holding down the search button.
Click the Lighting bolt symbol in Flash tool and select "Fastboot mode"
Click "Select kernel to Flash"
In the popup box I select "PLAY-GSM-DoomKernel-v14_boot.img" and click on open.
Flashtool indicates the flash attempt succeeds and takes approximately 2,.5 seconds.
Unplug device from PC.

Install Firmware
Copy Enhanced firmware ftf to flashtool firmware folder (C:\Flashtool\firmware)
Open Flash tool.
Shut down phone and connect it to the PC while holding down the back button.
Click the Lighting bolt symbol in Flash tool and select "Flashmode"
Select the R800i - 4.0.2.A.0.58 - Enhanced
Select - Wipe User data
Select Wipe Cache
Deselect Exclude System
Deselect Exclude Baseband
Select Exclude Kernel
Click on Ok

Flashing Rom
Turn on Device
Start press the up/down volume keys
....
It vibrates and then boots in to the Sony Stock image.
