[Q] Need help with 1106 and ICS

I have a captivate s/n 1106, and am trying to get ICS. Odin doesnt recognize and I cant root. I am new to Android, and only did vague research, but dug pretty deep. I have odin, and got up to gingerbread, but now i cant get it to root with SOC, or Odin. It doesnt recognize the device, and when i had it on Froyo, and tried to update from zip it would stop and say something about verifying signature. I am a noob, I don't know much, but i am willing and eager to learn. Thanks everyone..
