Wasn't it named ION back when it was show cased at CES? What I found hilarious is the fact that low end devices are launching with ICS where as ION will be shipped with Gingerbread.

Yup, in Sony's place I would release Hayabusa, just to have something to compete with iPhone 5 and GS3, but in reality it will be too little too late. After that they need to concentrate on 2013 and getting a PlayStation Vita Phone out early in the year and then a quad core A15 LTE device for Q1/2 using ST-E NT 9600. Get it out before every other player and market the hell out of it and ship it with Jelly Bean. If Sony really are the second largest contributor the AOSP after Google then they need to make it count.

@xperiax10.awesome: you obviously have no clue about the stocks and whatsoever. japanese industry suffers in general. the effects of the past desasters are still present. sony also made most os its loss due to their tvs and ps3/psvita.
the mobile division on the other hand is doing quite good ( compared to other divisions of sony).

sony is using the family brand strategy to deliver many devices under the same brand (xperia) and to fill many market segments and please consumers wishes (acro s e.g., is there another nice looking outdoor mobile phone with acceptable hardware?)
sony possibly sees a better chance to increase their market share through this strategy than competing directly with other companies in the high-end segment.
sony knows the possible dangers of this strategy, but decided for it after evaluation.
as u said sony has to change and they did change!
remember 2010. u just had the choice between x10, x10 mini/pro and x8. Now compare it to their current line-up.

Eventhough they have so many devices, they will be able to provide update for all devices (if possible), cus they have similar hardware parts, so no repetition of the x10 dilemma.

@maximus: i should have stopped after "In order of release date, newest first. Not including Japan only phones. Of those the only ones worth having are the Xperia P, Xperia U and Xperia Ion. The Xperia S uses last year's hardware and is too large for such a small screen".
so the xperia s has outdated hardware while the ion hasnīt. sony seems to have switched the s3 cpu with s4 on the ion.
and you do understand, that the xperia s isnīt in the same sectore as the one x and s3?
look at their prices and overthink your comment...

52 week, Sony down 50%, Nikkei 225 down 10%. Sony has completely underperformed and it is not just a case of being a Japanese company. Sony are doing badly in almost all sectors they are involved in. Beaten by Microsoft in gaming, beaten by Samsung in TVs, beaten by Apple in phones, laptops and soon TVs. Sony's only bright spot is insurance and banking which they are expanding. Trust me, this is what I do for a living. Sony are in bad shape, and it is because the product line up is too large and too confusing.

The Ion has LTE and a larger screen, that's what makes it more desirable.

I believe the point I was making is that Sony has no answer to the Galaxy S3 or iPhone 5 (or One X for that matter). That's the big failure, they have 11 phones out and not one of them can compete at the top of the market with the GS3, One X or soon iPhone 5.

I see. i just qouted a market analyst (michal pachter. he possibly just meant the gaming industry, i guess). Iīm not that interested in the stock markets, even tough I just graduate on an economical grammar school.

lte is not everywhere available. you will find lte only in major cities in germany for example.

the bigger screen could be a reason for buying, but nevertheless the screen of the xperia s is crispier because of the higher display density.
the battery and the build material/quality of the ion are the only superior aspects to the xs in my opinion.

yeah it can be confusing to the consumer, but u shouldnīt forget that sony just went for that strategy. they will re-evaluate their strategy and data and if needed decrease the amount of devices.

sony isnīt a newbie, they know how business work, even if they made some mistakes in the past.

Come on guys and girls! Calm down! Obviously, most of us on here are SONY fans and we have such high expectations from them because we BELIEVE they CAN deliver something exceptional. So our critique (at least mine) is not out of animosity but, rather disappointment! In layman's terms it's tough love!
Why so serious?

Exactly. None of the advice I have given is just to rag on Sony. It is because I want them to improve. I would love them to release a balls to the wall phone with quad core A15, PoweVR Rogue, a large OLED screen (with stripe RGB, not crappy Pentile) from JDI, LTE/HSPA+ with awesome build quality and a huge marketing budget with actually decent adverts which show what the phone does, not the "powered by imagination" artsy crap they had for X-S. I would buy that phone, even at Ģ599!

Looking at their 2012 product line up it is too confusing and there is still no halo device to push Sony's phones onto the front page of tech blogs and websites like the Galaxy S3.

We now have these phones for 2012:

Xperia tipo dual
Xperia tipo
Xperia miro
Xperia go
Xperia acro S
Xperia neo L
Xperia Ion LTE/HSPA
Xperia sola
Xperia U
Xperia P
Xperia S

In order of release date, newest first. Not including Japan only phones. Of those the only ones worth having are the Xperia P, Xperia U and Xperia Ion. The Xperia S uses last year's hardware and is too large for such a small screen, the comparison between the Galaxy S3 and X-S is quite illuminating to show how much wasted space there is in the design of the X-S.

Sony still haven't figures out that Apple take the vast majority of smartphone profits with just 3 different devices in production (iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S). The original strategy from Sony for Xperia S/P/U made sense. Three devices to take advantage of economies of scale and then a new flagship in Q3 to compete with iPhone 5. Sony should have released just five phones this year, the Xperia S/P/U in March 2012 and pushed ICS for May, then two more in July/Aug GX/SX International editions shipping with ICS on board and ready for Jelly Bean.

Sony's strategy is all wrong and I just hope that these phones are the last vestiges of Sony Ericsson and Sony are just releasing all the devices they had prototypes for. If Sony have another year where they release a billion different devices and no distinguishable halo device I don't see why they bothered to buy Ericsson out of the JV. Also, we still don't have a PlayStation Phone or even a hint of one to come, that would be great. Use the Vita SoC which is the strongest of all in production, quad core A9 with quad core+ ImgTec graphics. I'm sure Sony/Toshiba don't have any production constraints for the SoC either, no one is buying Vitas and production is quite slow.

Anyway, Sony had a decent campaign yesterday to generate hype for their upcoming devices and they completely disappointed everyone who bothered clicking. Look at the hype Samsung generated for GS3, leaking information a couple of weeks in advance to make sure the GS3 was always on the front page, it was the best executed hype campaign since iPhone 4. Sony need to learn from Apple and Samsung if they are going to compete at the top of the market. Announcing Hayabusa for Japan and not the west was a terrible idea, because if Sony start teasing an international announcement the whole tech world knows that its coming and we all know the specifications and how it runs with ICS. There will be no surprise and no reason for tech blogs and websites to keep it at the top of the agenda for months on end like the Galaxy S3.

I want to buy Sony's Q1 2013 flagship, the successor the X-S, but if this is the kind of **** Sony are going to pull then I might just go with iPhone 5. D:

you do realize that's why apple is capable of buying sony with cash right now?

You know the problem with Sony is that they make too many devices take their tv business going in losses a lot of models some have some features others have others it just confuses consumers why not just make it simple and go okay this is our high end model this is our mid range and this is the lowest end. Sony is great at innovation so why not make the use of it and go the apple way circa 97 when jobs came back few products to focus on but are world class and we all know Sony can do it with ease! This is a strategy Sony needs to adapt in all its hardware business simple along with making every product work in sync with its other products. Sony can become a more consumer friendly version of apple and no Sony won't make cheap products cause it believes in the razor blades model mostly.

I have nothing against Sony I just want it to survive and then go back to its glory days.
Samsung isn't good enough to be a market leader for me no class if you ask me. It may make fun of apple and isheeps but it's the one whose following them most :)
