No. They are primarily held in by friction, but the cover insures that they aren't lost if the phone is jolted or dropped.
The back cover consists of at least three components manufactured in a two-shot molding process:
1. A molded plastic (polycarbonate) frame
2. Antennas and leads for at least WIFI and something else, but I doubt a circuit related to the SIM and SD cards as Saket suggests since their receptacles are soldered directly to the mainboard.
3. An over-molded rubber outer.
The antennas and leads are concealed between the layer of plastic and rubber.
Brilliant stuff. I used to work for a global plastics company and I'm impressed by this little part. Don't loose it because your phone needs it. Without it you'll have to WIFI.
Just buy the phone already. It's a great device!
