The latest news from Zopo forums is 4.0 is almost done but they are stuck on bringing in 3D functionality. I was guessing that's the holdup since no other MT6575 phone is 3D capable. I wish they will just release a version without 3D first since not many people depend on that anyways.

On other MediaTek related news: It seems the new dual-core MT6577 phones are near their release. There's really high anticipation over there in China for this low cost performance platform. No clue if Zopo is working on one but the first couples of them will be by Huawei and Lenovo.

If anyone is looking to buy a MT6575 phone and can wait a bit, I'd advice to wait for the MT6577 phones. In addition to the obvious performance advantage, they will come with Android 4.0 installed. No update or wait needed.

You can find an ICS release (16/05/2012) for testing without 3d in:

Check page 2. It works great. I have tried it.

Thanks for the guides on how to install the ROM. However, I'm going mad. Whatever I do, there seems to be something stopping me. I've installed the driver. Now every time I connect the phone (turned off as instructed), it connects then disconnects.

I then try to run SP Flash Tool. When I choose the scatter-loading file, there are no directories on all the region names, preventing me from downloading.

I'm at the end of my tether. I'm new to this, although I have had Android phones in the past. Have I missed something obvious?

Update

Right, after managing to link the "boot" option with the ROM image, I ran the SP Flash Tool.

The phone disconnects instantly and I get the message:

BROM EORR : S_DL_GET_DRAM_SETTING_FAIL (5054)

EMI Obtain DRAM Failed!

Hint: Please check your load matches to your target which is to be downloaded.

Any ideas?

Many thanks! I'm losing my sanity here - it seems things NEVER go as I plan when technology is involved.

The phone (and all other MediaTek phone) will only stay in flash mode for a short time if no download is made during that time.

This makes installing of the driver kind of hard for you need to rush to install before the phone shuts itself down. Make sure Windows Device Manager is open when you plug the USB cable to the phone. Then watch the device list and look for it to show up. Right click at it the moment it shows up and update driver. Once you start the update, it's OK for it to shutdown. Windows will load the driver next time you plug it in.

To flash, you need to load the scatter file FIRST, then click the download button, THEN plug the phone in. And then wait.

BTW. Zopo just released a beta/test/trial version of ICS. Not sure I want to flash it yet. http://bbs.zopomobile.com/forum.php?...extra=page%3D1

So I flashed the test version of 4.0 and have these observations:
  • Calendar doesn't sync. I think it's missing the sync service app.
  • Some apps like HD Widgets and Sensor List become incompatible and can not be installed from Play Store.
  • Surprisingly, Google Maps is one of the incompatible apps even though it's part of the ROM.
  • Chrome Browser is another app that's expected to work but doesn't.
  • Generally it feels quite a bit snappier than 2.3.

Calendar sync is a deal breaker. I will play with it for a couple more days and revert back to 2.3.

Well. I guessed right. The ROM is missing GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk so Calendar is not even listed in account sync.

Rooted the phone and pushed the APK found in CM site and now it syncs.

Looks like I can keep it for a bit longer.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the help. In fact, it turned out the ROM I was trying with wasn't any good. I've redone it for ICS and all works well - like you said, a snappier version of 2.3!

I noticed you're having the same hiccup for the Google calendar sync - can you briefly explain what the issue is and how to fix, please? I didn't quite follow what your description.

I've tried going into recovery mode to root the phone again now it's on Android 4. However, each time I get a red triangle and exclamation mark. What have I done this time??

Cheers!

Gotcha! I took a clockworkmod recovery file and used this to replace the one in the ics update. After redoing the ics update (and meaning I'll have to start again customising and downloading apps), I can now access recovery mode and have tried to root the phone... However, it doesn't seem to give me SuperUser access.

In running a terminal emulator, I see the $ - so I guess somehow it is still unrooted. When I type "su" I get:

"reloc_library[1285]: 2864 cannot locate _mktemp..."

By the way, I found the clockworkmod file at zopo.ru

With a translate plug-in, this is an excellent source.

I've just about lost patience. Very tempting now to get this phone and chuck it in the bin...

I don't know whether it is worth noting, but I used the same root.zip as with 2.3. I'm not sure if there have been any updates.

Grab this file and run the .bat file to root your ZP100/200 with 4.0 ROM. It's from Zopo forums and I didn't try it. I have Android SDK installed already so I just manually entered the ADB commands in the bat file.

Thanks, your help's appreciated. I'm not familiar with this way to root. I've given it a shot but keep receiving a message saying "error: device not found"

Turned out to be a driver issue (thought I've already been through this...). In using SuperOneClick, I got the correct drivers on the computer then ran the batch file. It's rooting as we speak.

Again, thanks Stephen.

I'm refraining from typing in capitals here. And I have very little hair to pull out. For some bizarre reason, despite permissions with superuser access and installing apps from 3rd parties, installing the googlesyncadapter.apk doesn't work. It say "was not installed".

In just dragging and dropping the apk into my apps folder, the "calendar sync" option under my Google account appears. But when I highlight the box so it does sync, I get an error message instantly reply saying the "process.com.google.gapp" has stopped.

I'm presuming that I have a corrupt apk file. Where would you recommend that I download it?
