I have a Netgear WNR3700 with Openwrt firmware and I use an updated hosts file in the router itself for keeping most ads away.
This way it's active for all browsers and online stuff.
It may not be the best way to block it but it's working fine for me and I don't have to add it in the different browsers.

Without rooting you would have to do something on the router. Try googling for "[your router model] modifying host files" and see if you can find out how to do it. Though this will only block ads on your wifi, not when you take your tablet on the go.

This may also be called DNS remapping. Essentially, when your computer asks your router what the IP address for www.AnnoyingAdHoster.com is, it returns a fake IP address, which in turn causes the ads to fail loading.

This is the same as what AdFree does, but in your router instead of your phone.

Adblock Plus is a nicer solution, as it actually modifies the webpage a bit to completely remove the ad space so you won't get weird error 404 whitespaces all over the site.

Tech talk: yeah, I know it doesn't return a fake IP address, 127.0.0.1 is in fact a very real IP address and something I use quite a bit for service testing, but I igured explaining how it works isn't relevant for blocking ads
