The result below is from my Att one x. I heard the Sprint is capping bandwidth for download between 6-12mbps.

Did you have to turn on the screen before the texts came in? When I factory reset mine one of the prompts was to enable or disable automatic sync. I'm not sure if that applies to texts, but I wonder if the BBYM guy who set it up the first time chose disable...

Let's face reality folks.

The Evo 4G LTE's antennas are pretty bad. In a direct comparison between the OG Evo, Evo 3D, and the Evo 4G LTE, the EvoLTE was the loser.

With phones placed right next to each other, the results were:
-Evo 4G: -87dBm
-Evo 3D: -89dBm
-Evo LTE: -91dBm

And then it gets worse when you try to hold the phone
-Evo 4G: -89dBm
-Evo 3D: -91dBm
-Evo LTE: -97dBm!!

Thanks for concrete numbers to confirm my not as thorough tests. No software update is going to remedy this either, it is all hardware problems from what I can tell.

Harsh reality is that by end of week I will be returning mine and having them reactivate my original EVO 4G and will most likely wait for the S3. I really wanted this phone too , but can't get past this issue.

I've blamed the bad 3g speeds on the Sprint backhaul since at times with full bars speeds are in the 20kB/s range, but today was surprised Verizon 3g roaming speeds (using roam control) weren't any better than Sprint at my usual 3/4 bar signal levels...

I also drove to a less population dense area by the grr airport and was pulling almost 1Mbps at full bars... I never see those speeds around hinge or work...

Any idea if the evolte's 3g and 4g use the same antennas? Of course, I'll probably be happier with 20% of max LTE speeds...

Yeah it's a bit sad to see these numbers but do keep in mind that I don't have a SGS3 (or even SGS2) on hand to compare. The numbers I gave should only be used to compare against other phones in the exact same situation. The OG Evo was my baseline here, since it performed without issues in voice and data quality in these situations. The handheld numbers are then used to compare to the untouched handset numbers to see if we have a significant reception issue when held.

I do believe if HTC can find a way to replace the battery cover and its antennas with a better set, we may see better results.

EDIT:
Found some info on the SGS3 ERP data submitted to the FCC:
Maximum RF ERP: 17.78 dBm (CDMA1X 850), 20.77 dBm (EV-DO 850), 24.05 dBm (CDMA1X 1900), 23.85 dBm (EV-DO 1900), 17.21 dBm (CDMA1X 800), 17.56 dBm (EV-DO 800), 22.01 dBm (LTE 1900)

vs

the Evo LTE:
Maximum RF ERP: 20.43 dBm (CDMA1X 850), 18.74 dBm (EV-DO 850), 22.98 dBm (CDMA1X 1900), 18.44 dBm (EV-DO 1900), 20.01 dBm (CDMA1X 800), 18.75 dBm (EV-DO 800), 19.85 dBm (LTE 1900)

As you can see, there are certain areas where the SGS3 shines and certain areas where the Evo LTE shines as well. I have used bold to highlight where each phone has its advantages.

Here is a reference image submitted to the FCC showing the Evo LTE's antenna locations:

And here is a great discussion regarding the Evo LTE's antenna power:

I have noticed that if I don't put my fingers behind the phone, it will have decent signal... but then I can't hold the phone without fingers behind it! Lol

Default It's a hardware issue

I noticed that depending on where I put my hand on the phone, the reception changes considerably. I did a quick search yesterday and found this article:

mobilebloom.com/htc-evo-4g-lte-plagues-with-signal-strength-issues/2214916/

It seems that the phone's antenna's may be affected by the aluminum shell. Let's see what Sprint and HTC say about this major issue.

I get avg signal comparing it to my EVO 3D but what annoys me the most is that 3g and WiFi disconnects like crazy. Sometimes I can be browsing and the network connection just disappears and comes back. I would even do it several times in a row... Hope they fix this fast.

Had 2 PRL updates in the last 3 days, improved my signal strength by ~30% I'd say. Went from horrible to tolerable haha and I seem to stay over 40% everywhere I go now. It's still not where my old evo 4g was but it's a lot better. I was worried for awhile and close to returning the phone but now it's a keeper.
