[Q] Recovering data from a toasted A500

So the tablet had a bit of an accident where the power button broke off on the inside. I went to go solder the piece back on and accidentally burnt off one of the contacts on the board so now the power button won't work. Is there anyway I can recover the data from the internal SD card?

Take a look at this. There are many other ways to make the repair, but these are nice, and you should be able to resolder once applied.

I'll have to see if I can find that here. Is there any way to recover the data without having to do repairs?

The information, is stored on flash rom, which are probably perm attached to the MainBoard as with most things these days. Nothing that can be removed or popped into a card reader.

Not like in a PC, or an older device that used an eeprom. Of course you would have to have an eeprom reader to access it. But usually these were programmed at base level.

You should probably just send it in for repair. Chances are, they won't bother to look what's on your tab. Then again, if repair is in the US, Department of Homeland Security dictates all electronic repair facilities copy and send all information from all electronic devices turned in for service. There's always that chance.

50/50 chance they will send your tab back with all info.

It's not worth it, There is also damage to both cameras and the sd card slot. I was able to get a 16gb A501 online for $225, I just wanted some of the data that I had stored on the old one. I'll try and get the repair tool to fix it but I won't spend much money to repair it.

Well you can send the broken one to me and Ill be glad to mess with it, I need an extra one to tear apart , if you dont want it , dont throw it out!

Haha. I plan on attempting to repair this one. I want those files on there and IF I get it working, the wife can use it for her business. I checked the price on ebay just for that board piece, its half the cost of a new tablet.

no I wish I did MD , it would be fun playing with them, all I have right now is a HPJornada 680 , paid a buck for it and it works , only problem was it used a a port similiar to a USB (but it isnt usb) ,so I soldered a new port to it (usb) and it works (sort of) gotta figure out how to add the usb to CE , other than that for a touch screen built in the 90's it aint bad ,but CE is real limited!
