You can run a HD video in loop and see how long it runs before the software crashes.

That probably won't do it. Most HD video is h.264, and the tegra3 has dedicated hardware to handle that. You'd have to use some pretty crappy video software that didn't use hardware acceleration in order to stress the CPU.

I heard that playing flash (youtube) is a way to get the thing hot rather fast. Could use that to stress-test the thing, though I guess you'll have to find a long video and\or keep tapping on new ones, if it's impossible to play one in a loop.

Also, I'd suggest the following test for those who found disabling crapware helps with game crashes - try re-enabling the McAfee "antivirus" alone and see what happens? Something tells me this is indeed the culprit, so such singled-out testing might help prove\disprove this hypothesis.

For me, playing NFL Flick QB and Heavy Gunner both consistently get the A700 all fired up, so that's what I am using as my testing apps.

Disabling McAfee was actually one of the very first things I did when I unboxed my A700 (along with Ring and other stock apps I had no interest in), so that did not play a factor when I did start playing games which overheated and crashed my A700.

I also added an update to the original post, but I did wind up opening up the A700 last night and adding some thermal paste to the thermal pads. I'm pleased to report that that seems to have done the trick, though I'll give more detailed findings as I spend more time with it today.

High def might, but high def Flash from Dailymotion will get warmer. A510 and Flash via a browser got winter friendly warm/hot.

Default Some Quick Power Calculations

Battery, per the specifications is 9800mAh (36Wh)
Modern (internal) charger / power converter circuits are very efficient, say 85%.

Stock A700 charger is 12v 1.5A (18W)
THEORETICALLY, stock charger could charge this battery completely in 2.4h.

Commodity USB charger is 5v 0.5A (2.5W)
THEORETICALLY, USB charger could charge this battery completely in 17h.
(Users have reported a 4% charge rate, which would equate to 25h)

Amount of current you can push though connector pins is the usual limiting factor for charge rate.
The charge circuit inside the tablet is designed not to pull more than the pins are capable of carrying.

Assuming battery life of 8h in heavy use (Gaming, Video playback)
Tablet is dissipating 4W of energy on average, almost all of it going to heat

1. If you launch a game, it crashes after a certain time, coinciding with a considerable heating of the pad's body?
2. If you try to launch the same game right away (without letting the pad cool down), what happens?
3. If you try launching a different (but also graphics-intensive) game right away, what happens?
4. Have you tried uninstalling\freezing the McAfee antivirus, which, as claimed by some, may alleviate this problem (not very believable, though)?

Thank you!
1. Based on my experience, yes.

2. Didn't try that. Was disappointed so much that each time this happened, I just put it on the side and went on with my business.

3. Didn't try that either (the "right away" part). I have two games on it. The car racing game and the deer hunting game that I downloaded (can you tell by now that I am not a gamer!).

4. No! It is unbelievable, considering that I have spent 500 bucks on something that requires modifications for it to function just normally (not even optimally). I [now] dislike Apple products as much as the next guy, but I have owned all different variations of iPad before and I didn't have to disable a bunch of crapware or bloatware or whatever the hell ware JUST to get it to work normally and not crash on me... I just don't have time to go research and conduct tests and read on other people's experiences just to get my device to work like it should... remember? I paid 500 bucks for it! OK I'll stop venting--wish my Acer would do some venting...

The iPad 3 is nice because it works great and simply works. More importantly, it has a gpu to support higher res.

Yeah, but very limited functionality, no open file system and the itunes slavery are so repelling that I wouldn't consider an iDevice even if it brought me coffe to bed every morning.
