Thank a lot for the useful information and advice. I've now successfully flashed CM9 using the method in the OP with no problems.

However, I was already rooted and had speedmod flashed, so I didn't go to GB first (flashed CM and gapp from recovery then wiped, and as in OP) . Is this a safe method or was I lucky?

Did you come from a Stock ICS ROM?
(Stock = Samsung TouchWizz)

Have you tried the App that checks for the "emmc bug" ?

I think you probably were "lucky" but now your on CM9, you should be safe... just flash responsibly and you'll be fine.

I was on stock ICS ROM (using Touchwiz). However I was using Speedmod kernel and my understanding is that its the kernel that causes the problems and Speedmod has disabled the emmc wipe call, so it should be safe to flash without going to GB?

Is this correct? Don't want to give anyone dangerous advice so will edit this post if need be.

I did use the bug app and I have the bugged hardware.

Yes you are correct.
SpeedMod is just the removal of the erase_emmc_command. Its still NOT a safe kernel as the bug is there, it just won't be activated. Think of it as an AK47 pointed at your face, however the trigger has been sawn off... its still dangerous but you're not gonna get shot, so you're "safe". : )

Hello all,

I am usually a creeper on these forums but I decided to register an account to give back a little of what I learn/observe. I am a veteran Motorola Milestone custom rom addict and have just moved to the Note and finding it a little more complicated that what I am used to.

Anyway I was on stock ICS rom, and I wanted to downgrade to GB so I could flash a custom rom of my choice. I already had the pre-rooted ROM downloaded from Dr. Ketan so I wanted to try and use that in these instructions. I did the following:

1. Installed Samsung Kies.
2. Checked for update from Samsung Kies and updated Kies.
3. Connected my phone to Kies and checked if Kies detected the phone properly.
4. Downloaded PC Odin from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...1&d=1323799721
password:samfirmware.com
5. Downloaded pre-rooted rom from Dr. Ketans signature link (thank you dr) BTW I did this as the rom given in the original instructions needed a password to extract??
6. Ran PC odin
7. Rebooted Note in download mode - vol. down+home+power buttons
8. Connected download mode Note to PC
9. PC odin ID:COM turns yellow:
10. In PC ODIN
Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time ---> Ticked
Others --> Unticked
10. Clicked PDA and selected the rom from dr ketans sig link I had downloaded.
Clicked start.
Fone did its thing rebooting, when touch android to begin came up there were lots of force closes so...
11. went to recovery mode (vol up + home + power)
cleaned dalvik cache and wiped data and factory reset
12. rebooted system

and that was it and now I am running GB and ready to rock the ROMS!

I know I am not adding much to the convo but I just wanted to say that as a noob note flasher, these instructions worked for me to downgrade stock ICS to gb.

Many thanks to everyone!

DONATE TO ME
yes this is short procedure and recommend to Arungupta to edit OP.
This procedure will cut off at least few steps.
e.g.
step.5 replaced with downloading pre rooted ROM
then flashing with this ROM will lead you to step 11 directly.
