Dual core is running when you get your evo 3d stock, but that is kernel related. HTC TRIES to do the best of both worlds but frankly battery life is kinda hellish on a stock kernel, yes there are roms with custom kernels that have the "smart" capability of automating when the dual cores kick in and turn off WITH apps that can control this function. So if you go with a custom kernel you can get as close to the best of both worlds as u can.

How is the battery hellish? Most of the time the second core is snoozing and saving battery. A lot of custom kernels or roms run the second core when the screen is on, or even worse, at all times. The battery life sucks on those

I have no problems with both cores being enabled... really depends on the kernel.

By default the second core becomes activated when the first core can't handle the work load. So battery with the stock kernel is fine.

Now, if you have both cores activated simultaneously, your battery life will take a hit.

The NS4G is a Google phone with an official ICS update, with source released and that stuff has been out longer. The 3D had source released for GSM recently. I guess things have recently gotten better with this phone and will probably improve in time as far as roms/kernels concerned. The NS4G was my previous phone btw.
