On my Nexus 7, in the "Date & time" section of the Settings app, I only have "Automatic date & time" at the top. But on my phone I have both "Automatic date & time" and "Automatic time zone". I'm currently running stock 4.2 (rooted) if that makes a difference.

Can anyone else please check your "Date & time" real quick, and confirm if you have a "Automatic time zone" option on your Nexus 7 or not? Thanks!

I suspect that phones get this information from the GSM/CDMA network. Since a wifi N7 doesn't have the ability to talk to them, it can't get this info. It's probably possible to figure this out from location info, but that is a serious pain in the butt to do. There are a lot of exceptions in the rules for TZs. Seems like Google hasn't done the work to do it in Android.
