Default ***READ: Windows Mobile 2005 and XDAIIs/MDAIII/PDA2K/etc ***

Please read this before asking questions!
  • As of this time, there is no Blue Angel-compatible CE ROM of Windows Mobile 5 to date, in beta or final form, in circulation nor available for examination or experimentation to us.

As of this time, there are no official or unofficial plans or announcements by any manufacturer, distributor, or wireless carrier.

Please do not create new threads or post off-topic in current threads that are in regards to this UNLESS you have witnessed firsthand that one does exist or that you are or can be in possession of a Blue Angel device that has actual Windows Mobile 5 code on it.

As soon as we can get our hands on a test ROM, we will let you know as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Thanks to BeyondtheTech for the idea and text.

This was posted today at PocketPCThoughts:

Quote:
"We have mentioned to our customers that we need several months to add combine additional elements, such as the radio and Bluetooth hardware and software, we require to produce fully integrated PDA's and Smartphones. We will be launching some exciting new products that run on Windows Mobile 5.0 later in the year. We have made an assessment of our current devices and it is unlikely that current products will run Windows Mobile 5.0."

This excerpt comes from an email sent to one of our longtime readers, Paragon, regarding his query on the possibility that current i-mates would get a 2005 upgrade. While I can sympathize with those users who own current i-mates, I really can't say I'm surprised at the news. Windows Mobile 2005 seems to me to be a much major upgrade than 2002 - 2003 or 2003 to 2003 SE, and because of that, manufacturers are probably hard pressed to take hardware suited for one platform and make it work on upgrade of that platform.

But I guess we can always hope - anyone going to keep holding their breath that i-mate will change it's mind?
I guess this is the final call by them. I am trying to verify that. Very odd, since the PDA2K and the PDA2 both seem to have good hardware specs for fitting to the new OS

Do not expect that microsoft will goin to release a magneto for XDA, XDA II, XDA IIs, XDA IImini, XDA IIi. The magneto is not free for upgrade although some has allowed to have a free upgrade like iPaq but ill tell you there will no official release ever happen. the Second Edition isnt for all himalaya users except for dopod.

double_ofour,

You have a basic mistake in your assumption:

Microsoft doesn't release specific versions of the OS for each device. Microsoft releases the Kernel of the OS, and each device maker releases the version for their own device.

So we shouldn't be expecting that Microsoft will be releasing an upgrade for HTC's devices, but we should expect that from HTC. Many device makers release the upgrades for prices around $30 (when they don't want to do it for free), so this could be possible.
