Default O2 XDA SP Smartphone. Help please.

I have just got one of these things and its generally fine now that I have chosen a simple today screen without active icons. Now running half right.

The problem is that there must be something running in the background as the battery can go flat overnight. Has a similar problem with my xda2 and 1, but smartphone windows is a bit different and I'm confused. What could be causing this and how do I stop anything not essential to normal use of the phone. I don't need it popping up telling me I'm late for an appointment as I happy enough checking my calender manually.

Please help if you can by telling mwe what is happening in the background and hammering my battery life, and how to stop it.

Cheers all.
Had an XDA 1, 2, 2i, Mini s, orbit, orbit2, zest, and now a Snap. The software (OS) could be better.

Isn't the XDA SP Smartphone the Wm2003 phone and not the Tornado (WM5)? You may need to post in the correct topic (Typhoon)
