4. Only Touchwiz based 4.4.2 ROMs will work. Some GPE ROMs may work with limited functionality. CM and AOSP will not as they are not compatible with the Stock Kernel.

1. If ROM uses Aroma Installer... UNCHECK reboot option at end. (This will allow you to go back to safestrap and flash the modules)
2. Some ROMs require SuperSU to be installed. Link to latest SuperSU.zip can be found in the Install Instructions below.
3. For non-ATT based ROMs, you may need to configure APN settings for LTE and text messaging to work. (See post #1 for more details)
4. On Verizon based ROMs, if you have an issue connecting to your voicemail, go to phone settings and verify vm number is your phone number and not *86. (thanks @hovax615@hotmail.com)

***Now that safestrap v3.72 has been released, MK2 and NB1 users who downgraded only need to Odin the Magic Tool Kit files the FIRST time they install a 4.4.2 ROM. Afterwards they can reboot into recovery and flash as many mods or new 4.4.2 ROMs without ever having to go back into odin. The only time they would have to use Odin again is if they want to return to 4.3 ROMs.***

For MK2 Base Users (never took NB1 OTA)

Files you will need before starting:

9. Phone will reboot automatically

How to Replace the Updater-Script

Some ROMs may require the updater-script to be replace to work with safestrap recovery. Check the ROM notes below to see if your ROM is one. (FAQs post has more details on why this may be necessary)

Notes
The updater-script is located in the ROM install zip.
Specifically... \META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script

An easy way to edit the zip file is with 7zip. (Its a free Windows program that lets you browse and make changes to the archive without having to unzip and rezip the entire file.)

Step 1
Download and extract the updater-script from the zip file

Step 2
If the file is "updater-script" (with no .txt) you can delete the original in the ROM zip and replace it with the modified updater-script

(If the file is "updater-script.txt", you should be able to just delete the ".txt" extension. Then delete the original in the ROM zip and replace it with the modified updater-script)

Step 2 (alternative)
- Drag the original "updater-script" to your desktop and delete it from the ROM install zip.
- Open both (original and modified) updater files with Notepad++ (another free Windows program)
- Replace the contents of the original updater-script with the contents of the modified updater-script
- Save the "newly edited" original update-script and drag it back ROM install in 7zip

Step 3
All done. Close 7zip and copy newly update ROM install zip to your extSdCard and flash away.

If you took the NB1 OTA...
1. Please follow the NB1 to MK2 Downgrade Method to get back to MK2 before proceeding with the installation.
2. Even using the bypasslkm exploit, you may experience issues with wifi.

Install Instructions for all MK2 users and NB1 users who downgraded:
1. Download ROM install files and copy to extSdcard
2. Reboot into SS recovery
3. If choosing STOCK Slot... WIPE > advanced wipe (everything except extSdCard)
3. If choosing ROM Slot... Delete and recreate ROM slot1 (then verify you are on the ROM slot)
4. INSTALL ROM .zip file
5. INSTALL 'jflteatt-MK2-modules.zip' found in safestrap thread. (Optional if MK2 module is included in ROM)
6. Reboot
7. Configure APN Settings

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Determine your backup folder location. (If you know it or have a previous backup, skip to step 2.)
- reboot into SS recovery
- on stock slot, backup cache partition only
- reboot
- verify folder location on extSdCard (mine was TWRP/BACKUPS/8e9c0743/)
2. Unzip ROM zip file and copy to backup folder location on extSdCard
3. Reboot into SS recovery
4. If choosing STOCK Slot... WIPE > advanced wipe (everything except extSdCard)
4. If choosing ROM Slot... Delete and recreate ROM slot1 (then verify you are on the ROM slot)
5. RESTORE > select backup folder
6. Select all and then swipe to restore
7. INSTALL 'jflteatt-MK2-modules.zip'
8. Reboot
9. Configure APN Settings

1. Power off phone
2. Boot into Download Mode
--- press and hold BOTH power and volume down buttons
--- when you see "Warning!" screen, release both buttons
--- press volume up to continue
3. Connect phone to PC via usb cable

5. Right click Odin and run "as administrator"
6. Click AP button and select extracted .tar.md5 file

OPTION 1... Over the Air
1. Go into Phone Settings > More > About Device > Software Update > Check for updates
2. Follow prompts to download and install NI1 update
3. Phone will reboot when complete... You are now on STOCK NI1!!!

OPTION 2... Manually Flash NI1 Update via Stock Recovery
1. Copy I337_NB1toNI1_OTA.zip to your External SdCard
2. Unplug and power off phone
3. Boot into Stock Recovery
--- press and hold BOTH power and volume up buttons
--- when you see the blue "RECOVERY BOOTING..." message in the top left corner, release power button
--- when you see the android guy, release volume up button
4. Select "apply update from external storage"
5. Browse to location of I337_NB1toNI1_OTA.zip and select it
6. Phone will reboot when complete... You are now on STOCK NI1!!!

STEP 3 - ROOT AND INSTALL RECOVERY
1. Reboot into Download Mode
2. In Odin, and flash NC1 Kernel file in the AP slot
3. Phone will reboot
4. Upload Towelroot and ss files to External SDcard
5. Go into Settings > More > Security

7. Open Towelroot and click make it ra1n... You are now rooted!!!

9. Open Safestrap and click Install Recovery... You now have recovery!!!

11. In Odin, and flash NI1 Kernel file in the AP slot
12. Phone will reboot when complete... You are now Rooted on NI1!!!

*** If you encounter issues installing the safestrap recovery... install SELinux Mode Changer from the Play Store and switch the mode to Permissive. Then try rooting or installing safestrap again. ***

(In order to for Towelroot to work, the NC1 Kernel was added to the NB1 odin file. That said, the NB1 and NC1 kernels are very similar and either module should work.)

STEP 1 - FLASH MK2 FIRMWARE IN ODIN
on phone...
1. power off phone
2. boot into Download Mode
--- press and hold BOTH power and volume down buttons
--- when you see "Warning!" screen, release both buttons
--- press volume up to continue
3. connect phone to PC via usb cable
ON PC...
4. extract .tar.md5 from MK2 OTA .rar file
5. Right click Odin and run "as administrator"
6. click AP button and select extracted .tar.md5 file
7. click Start
8. Phone will reboot when complete... You are now on STOCK MK2!!!

STEP 2 - ROOT WITH SAFEROOT
on phone...
1. Go to Settings > More > About Phone... Tap Build Number repeatedly until developer mode is enabled.
2. Go to Settings > More > Developer Options... Enable USB debugging
3. Connect phone to PC
on pc...
4. On PC, unzip saferoot.zip, and browse to folder.
5. Run install.bat and follow prompts. (phone will reboot) You are now rooted!!!

STEP 3 - INSTALL SAFESTRAP RECOVERY
1. Copy safestrap file to extSdCard
Open My Files app, browse to Safestrap-JFLTEATT-3.71.apk, click it, and install.
2. Open Safestrap and click Install Recovery... You now have recovery!!!

You are now ready to flash a 4.3 Jelly Bean ROM. See post 2 for list of compatible ROMs and installation instructions. Make sure to use the MK2 modules.

To run KitKat ROMs... Install Safestrap 3.72 instead of v3.71 and see Post 2 for KitKat ROM install instructions. After installing a KitKat ROM, remember flash the MLD modules. (To make KitKat ROMs possible, the Magic Tool flashes the MLD kernel.)

MK2 STOCK
Can only be used if you are on MLD, MK2, or earlier base...

If you wish to upgrade to latest update...
Go into Phone Settings > More > About Device > Software Update

Odin is a 3rd party program that can restore your phone to factory settings. Post 5 has a step by step walkthrough for flashing the NB1 base image. (Those wishing to flash the MK2 base can follow the same guide, substituting in the MK2 files linked in post 1.)

No. You can only restore your current base or newer. You cannot go backwards. Two exceptions... MLD leak and NC1 update. Those that flashed the MLD leak can Odin back to MK2. Those that took the NC1 update can Odin back to NB1.

Odin to NB1... from ANY base
Odin to MK2... from MLD, MK2, MF3, or earlier.

That said, if you are on NB1 and would like to flash 4.3 ROMs, you can follow the DOWNGRADING FROM NB1 TO MK2 guide linked in post 1.

If you are on MK2, NB1, or NC1 base, then you have a locked bootloader. SAFESTRAP is the ONLY recovery you can use.

Every ROM listed in the thread have been confirmed to work with our phone. Yes... There are i9505 ROMs listed in the thread too.

Sure. It's your phone. You can flash whatever you want... BUT IT WON'T WORK. Since our bootloader is locked, we can cannot change the kernel. This means only ROMs that are compatible with the stock touchwiz kernel will work.

Since Safestrap is designed to work around the locked bootloader, it works a little different that the other recoveries. There is one line that gives Safestrap trouble...

format("ext4", "EMMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p16", "0");

This is where the /system partition lives. While wiping /system is ok, formatting the entire block must delete a file or symlink that safestrap cannot restore.

Check the ROM list. There will be a note if the updater-script needs to be replaced. I have uploaded a copy for your convenience, but you are welcome to edit the script on your own. Instructions for replacing the updater-script are located in post 2.

***FAILURE TO REPLACE UPDATER-SCRIPT, WHEN NEEDED, WILL RESULT IN ENDLESS BOOTANIMATION***

Did you wait long enough? Some ROM can take up to 10 min to come up on the initial boot.

Did you forget to replace the updater-script? Endless bootanimation is a symptom of formatting "/dev/block/mmcblk0p16" for safestrap users.

If you don't think the updater-script was the issue, try flashing a previously working ROM. If the other ROM works, it might have just been a bad download. Otherwise or if you know the updater-script was the cause, try restoring a previous backup. If that does not work, your only choice will be to Odin back to stock.

Locked bootloader means we are stuck with the stock kernel. In order for wifi to work, we need to make sure the modules in the "/system" partition match the kernel version.

If the ROM you are flashing has the same base as your kernel, you DO NOT need to flash the modules separately.

Took NI1 update --> ATT_NI1_modules.zip
Took NC1 update --> ATT_NC1_modules.zip
ODIN NB1 (rootable) --> ATT_NC1_modules.zip -- NC1 Kernel was added to Odin file in order for Towelroot to be compatible.
ODIN MK2 (running KitKat ROMs) --> ATT_MLD_modules.zip -- MLD Kernel is Odin'd as part of the Magic Tool process.
ODIN MK2 (running 4.3 ROMs) --> jflteatt-MK2-modules.zip

If you are not sure, you can run a script to check. More details can be found here...

NOTE - The NB1 kernel and NC1 kernel are so similar that either module can be substituted.

In System Settings, can you flip the Wifi toggle to the ON position?
If NO, then you do not have the correct modules installed. Please run the script to verify your kernel.
If YES, then the modules are NOT the issue. Double check your wifi password or try reboot your router.

Each situation is different, but...
1. MOD was built using one base and your ROM is built with a different base.
2. Dev already modified that aspect of the ROM. (ie - Battery icon MOD might not work correctly if dev already baked in his own custom battery icon into his ROM.)

The Tool was created to allow MK2 users and NB1 users (who used the downgraded method in order to root) to run KitKat ROMs. Now that towelroot has been released, NB1 users can upgrade to NC1 to root and no longer need the magic tool.

MK2 users will still need to use the tool the first time they flash a KitKat ROM, as well as NB1 users wishing to flash 4.3 ROMs.
