Default [Q] Help with update path

Looking for a little help.

I've been out of the scene for quite a while. My phone is currently Stock (MDL Software, Baseband, and Build) Rooted with only the Hot Spot Mod installed. Looking to get updated to the latest (NAE??) and curious what my best course of action is...

Obviously, i don't want my phone "locked down" (i believe this was post MF9, but i could be wrong)

I prefer to stay stock, just want the ability to root.

Also, i would prefer to not have to "wipe" my phone, as i have it set the way i like it. If that is possible, that would be great, if not, well, oh well

Suggestions are appreciated.

I would odin to MF9 ... I don't think Knox is tied to that bootloader.

From there you can flash NAE and the firmware separately.
