Hi all,

I'm trying to compile a list of DACs which have been tested with the Nexus 7 2013.

If you use, or have come across a report of someone using a DAC with the Nexus 7 flo/deb, I would appreciate it if you post your results here with the setup used.

The details I'm looking for is:
--------------------------------------------------
1. Make/model of DAC
2. Whether DAC is USB powered / or battery powered / or requires a separate charger
3. Whether the Nexus can be charged while using the DAC (if so, is it using a Y cable or a wireless charger)
4. ROM used
5. Kernel used
6. Apps tested working / not working // other issues
--------------------------------------------------

So far, the only complete info I have is for this DAC:

Quote:

1. HiFimeDIY Sabre Tiny USB DAC
2. USB powered
3. Yes; using Y-cable with kernel in USB+OTG [no fastcharge] mode.
4. Bruce2728 non caf
5. ElementalX-N7
6. n/a

Info 2
So, in spite of the lack of any positive feedback, I went ahead and bought a Fiio E17 DAC.

Tried it on SlimROM with ElementalX kernel. dmesg detected it when I plugged in, but Android doesn't - it still pays back sound from the speakers / lineout.
Since the kernel was detecting it, decided to try the USB Audio Player app - and viola, it works!

Unfortunately, this is less than ideal as I really want the DAC to work with Spotify, DI.fm and other apps - basically I want Android to recognize it as a standard device.

I'll have to try it out with bruce2728's CM11 port and see how it goes. But for now, I'm truly enjoying listening to some Pink Floyd on my Takstar 2050 'phones - sounds really amazing!

Thumbs up
And it lives!

Switched to bruce2728's CM11 with ElementalX kernel and my Fiio E17 works beautifully with all apps!

Apps tested: Spotify, Play Music, PlayerPro, DI Radio, Neutron Player
What's working: DAC, volume control from android, DSP Manager
What's not: 24bit playback , hot-plugging
Yet to test: DAC + Nexus 7 charging at the same time.

Not sure if it's a kernel limitation or DAC+Android compatibility issue? Tried playing some 24bit Pink Floyd SACDs via Neutron Player - it detects it as 24bit but Fiio only shows it as 16bit. Mind you it does sound really good, just a bit disappointed that I can't play it in all it's 24-bit glory.

I'll have to investigate this further. But as it is, I'm quite satisfied with the whole setup overall.

I did the same with my Burson Audio DAC but nothing happens. When i conect the DAC it cames no Sound from Nexus speakers but also no sound from the DAC. Maybe it is nescessary to use a USB booster?

Which ROM/kernel are you using? Also, have you tried rebooting it with the DAC plugged in? I found that hot-plugging doesn't work why my setup.

Hi
I tried bruce2728's CM11 with ElementalX 2.6. I also tried to rebbot with DAC and use a Y-OTG cable but the result is still the same. In the App "USB Host Controller" i see my DAC is connected!! But no sound cames from.

Furthermore with my Fiio E18 DAC the Nexus works fine but why not with the Burson?

Could be that the kernel doesn't support it. Try the stock CM11 kernel (just re-flash the ROM) and see if it makes any difference? Also, it would be helpful if you could see if dmesg detects it.

Open a terminal, plug the DAC in, wait a couple of seconds and type "dmesg | tail" and see if anything is listed.

You should also check is whether there is any Linux support at all for your DAC, so on a desktop, pick a recent distro like Ubuntu 13.10, plug the DAC in and see if it's working there or not. If it's not working on desktop Linux, then there's little chance of it working on Android.

Thank you for your feedback. I installed stock cm11 but the Problem is still the same. In terminal I receive the following information: u0_a59@flo:/ $ dmesg | tail
klogctl: Operation not permitted
u0_a59@flo:/ $ dmesg | tai
klogctl: Operation not permitted
/system/bin/sh: tai: not found

It is for sure that the Burson DAC works with Android because with my NEXUS 10 I can here music with this Dac.

what you just posted is your battery status. this is typically posted at some timer delay (some cron job prolly), and has nothing to do with USB DAC.

plug your tablet to a computer using USB, get the android sdk

cd adt-bundle.../sdk/platform-tools

type adb logcat > mylog.txt
control+c to break (since it continues forever)

then post the log to pastebin and link it to us

do dmesg > mydmesg.txt and post that to pastebin as well.

make sure its fresh after a reboot so that we dont have to read through pages of junk. the tablet should be plugged to the DAC at boot time, so that it tries to initialize it and we see the relevant error messages.

Working DAC

1. Behringer UCA 202
2. USB Powered. Connected to a Powered USB hub through an OTG+Charge cable
3. Can be charged using Y cable
4. Bruce2728 (20140207 build)
5. stock kernel from bruce
6. Works with all apps (spotify etc). Volume at the tablet (or connected keyboard) modifies volume at the DAC. Also dac has volume knob for headphone output (1/8 inch trs jack)

Does not work
1. Focusrite Saffire 6 USB (USB 2.0 version) (gets identified and loaded in ALSA but still fails to play out)
2. Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 (identified but ALSA cannot load)

I'm using a USB powered FiiO E10 to drive my ATH-M50s for my Nexus 7 running Slimkat 3.0 with the stock Slimkat kernel.
Everything works fine using USB Audio Player Pro, but no luck without it. I don't have a Y cable to test charging capabilities.
