SMS tone is set within the messaging app itself.
Open messages, select settings>notifications where you can set what you like.

some days you are the bug........ other days you are the windscreen !

If your phone is rooted copy the custom tone to the System/Media/Audio/Notifications folder.
If not rooted see if you have a Ringtones folder on your sdcard and if so copy the tone there and see if it then appears in the notifications list.
Either way may require a reboot before it appears.

Can you see a ringtones folder in your internal storage (sdcard) ?

If it's a song, can you do it from the Music player by selecting Set as ringtone in settings?

Go to the song you like in music player and press settings and "set as ringtone"

Create a folder called "Notifications" in the same place your Ringtones folder is on your internal SD card. That should take care of it.
Devices: G1 > Droid > Nexus One > G2 > myTouch 4G > Nexus S > Fascinate > Thunderbolt > iPhone 4 > iPhone 4S > Galaxy Nexus > iPhone 5 > Galaxy S3 > Droid DNA > Galaxy S4 > One > iPhone 5S > Nexus 5 / Nexus 7
