Default Bootloop or broken power switch?

So a co-worker of mine thinks I'm her personal repair shop after fixing a couple other devices for her and now she's thrown this S2 on my lap. She's not even good looking.

Anyway, the battery will not charge in the phone. I charged it externally and when I put it back in the phone it just loops the galaxy s2 logo. I know the Samsung phones have crappy power buttons (I just replaced one in her S3).

Can anyone tell me which situation is more likely here before I take it apart?

Thanks!

Phone model from battery on phone chassis under sticker (not all 'S2s' are created equal) ?
If it's important enough to cause you grief if it's lost, back it up. No excuses
Trolling for thanks is lame
Does Samsung's auto-brightness implementation crap drive you to self-harm ? A solution !
Failure to search is the leading cause of male impotence on XDA
If you don't know how to recover if things go wrong, what are you doing flashing custom roms ?

A faulty power button could be the cause.....the best way to tell is to try and boot the phone to both recovery and download modes.....
If the phone stays in recovery or download, it's the OS.....
If the phone reboots and bootloops then it's the power button.......

Edit....if you take the battery out and then put it back in, does the phone start up without you pressing the power button?........
