Check out this thread for probably a better solution than mine. He hacked it to allow BOTH version installed side by side.

If you are like me and many others you prefer the old version of Google Maps.

I've tried very hard to like the new version. But it just ain't happening. And my wife had fit when I accidently updated hers.

As some of you know it's not hard to uninstall the new version (under settings Apps) and install the old version.

Problem is it keeps wanting to update to the new version.

And so you have to shut off automatic updating.

And if you get a bunch of updates you want to hit Update All and then you have to quickly go in an cancel Google Maps update.

It's a pain.

So I "fixed it".

I modified the version of the old Google Maps to be two minor versions higher than the latest (7.7.0). That is, I set it to 7.9.0

So now it won't update until 8.0.0 or 7.10.0 is released Maybe by then they will fix it.

That is the only change.

The biggest beef I have with the new version is no Real Time Traffic.

You have to cancel the route and look at traffic in preview mode only.

The old version gave you constant status (with RED, Green or Yellow Dot next to your ETA) and you could switch to Overview to see traffic any time during route.

It was also much easier to seek alternate routes while routing. Again you can only decide alternate routes ONLY BEFORE you start Nav with the new version.

It's just awful compared to the old version.

This will install fine over the old version without losing Data. At least it did on my wifes phone

If any dev's want to use this feel free to do so.

To get rid of it. Just simply uninstall it.

This will probably work on Stock ROMs with the new version installed in System as well.

Doesn't the ETA/Distance change color during the route instead of the colored dots?

Are you saying on the new version the ETA/Distance changes color itself. I had not noticed that. You still can't see where it is though, without canceling the route.

I keep thinking it's all hidden in there but I can't a way to us it like I used the old version.
