Converting videos for use on my device

I've got a Universal but I figured I'd post it here as it isn't specific to that device.

I'd like to take some of my .avi's (DivX and XviD mainly) and change the resolution to 320x240 so the files aren't as large as they're currently at a higher resolution which is pretty much wasted on my device.

How should I go about doing this? I know nothing of video conversion. Also, can the device play DivX/XviD files? Does a WM5 codec exist?
