Default SetHSDPA.zip -- anyone tried it?

I found this file on ftp:

ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com...s/SetHSDPA.zip

I don't know who uploaded it and where is it from (probably an ExtROM).

I used cabextract and strings commands to see what's in there, it seems released by HTC, as it contains this string, very similar to others found on other HTC binaries:

d:\My Documents\HTC\Proj\Hermes\SetHSDPA\Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK (ARMV4 I)\Release\SetHSDPA.pdb

Anyone tried it? Is it really working? Is there more info about this I am missing?... thanks!

Oh yeah, pof !
Also just discovered it on the ftp.
Mystification or leeched from a HTC server ?

The exe won't run on the PDA, but what should it do if run on a PC ?

On the one hand I keep away from trying out dubious software on the PC (won't catch me one of those tricky rootkit trojans or the like).

On the other hand you can also find information on this code here:
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/kyunga/20060707
and here
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/kyunga/20060720

Only problem is:
I do not understand Japanese...

But I'm sure someone here can read this and can report what our friends far away in Japan might have found out
[Calling for xda-dev members from Japan !]

Also I'd be interested in finding out what it does as I always "only" get very good UMTS speed with my HTC here, though HSDPA is there (checked with one of those Mobile Connect Data Cards).

So my TyTN is either not (yet) HSDPA enabled or somehow it is unable to "understand" the encoding from the network here and falls back to UMTS.

Interesting anyway, but I'm sure we will find out about it soon.

You have to run the .lnk file, not the .exe file, this is what it does: SetHSDPA.exe /Enable

Neither do I, but I'm sure someone will be able to translate if there's anything interesting there

Yes, I am original writer of those articles in my blog
20060707 is written about SetHSDPA.exe option, and 20060720 is about English ROM for Dopod CHT9000 (actually for Dopod 838 Pro that just released in Singapore).

I guess SetHSDPA.exe is in the ROM of all HTC hermes devices. The "SetHSDPA.exe /enable" or "SetHSDPA.exe /disable" is described on PreAutoRun.txt file in \Windows folder of Hermes, and be executed it at the first (or hard reset) initializing process of device(before AutoRun from Extended_ROM).
You can check whether HSDPA of your device is enabled or disabled through open the \Windows\PreAutoRun.txt. At least in case of CHT9000, HSDPA is enabled by default.

Regarding the SetHSDPA.zip on the FTP, I guess a Japanese guy (NOT me) has uploaded it, because I saw a post about uploading this file in a Japanese BBS yesterday.
In Japan, NTT DoCoMo (the largest mobile phone service provider in Japan) has started to ship Japanese version of Hermes under the "hTc Z" name from end of last month. hTc Z have also SetHSDPA.exe in the ROM, however it has DISABLED by default, because still DoCoMo has not started HSDPA service on their UMTS network (branded as "FOMA") yet. I heard it will be started end of this month or early September.
So I guess the Japanese poster of this file has copied it from his or her CHT9000, and post into the FTP with /enable shortcut (.lnk).

Yes you're right, I've checked on my TyTN and SetHSDPA is in \Windows folder and called from PreConfig.txt file (not PreAutoRun.txt).

There is some other interesting stuff on that file also

Many thanks for your clear explanation, I posted the details to wiki

My V1605 shows "disable" in preconfig.txt. Phoned customer support at VF business and was told that this was correct as they are currently only supporting HSDPA on data cards. At this time it is not clear if/when this may change! This is totally different to what I was told when I ordered it.

Since I got my t-mob data card at the weekend I thought the V1605 was slow.

The sethsdpa.ink will not run on my device so I assume it is a first boot only thing, if not somebody please tell me how to make it run!

just put .exe and .lnk in the same folder, and click on .lnk. Nothing is displayed on the screen (as it is intended to run at boot time, and you don't want to see popups when booting), but HSDPA is then enabled.
