Hey devs, I'm no developper, just a regular grateful member, I've been here for more than 3 years, and I really love this forum for what it offers! Anyway, there has been some fights between ROMs devs, as always on xda, and every time things get worst.
Some hard working devs, get pissed off when other devs copy their work and optimize the ROM, so thing start to go in the wrong direction, and usually ends up with disruption of a ROM or even loosing some good devs.
I'm not here to judge the hard worker dev, or the optimiser dev, I'll try to offer a suggestion about how this problem could be avoided.
A new ROM naming system.
When a dev base his ROM on CM9, MIUI or other official Mods, he include the name in the Title of the ROM, like [ROM][ICS] MIUI bla bla bla, so that users know that this a MIUI ROM. So why we don't include this naming system when copying from other dev. For example I copied "XYZ" ROMs and added some new stuff, optimazation and improvements, so I must put in the title the source like [ROM][ICS] MIUI XYZ bla bla bla so that we preserve the source. Maybe it's more complicated then that when it comes to more than one person contributing in the ROM, it will be a long title for a ROM :P but what the heck! it's better than loosing spirit and devs.
And about donations, maybe the original source should get some percentage, for example, [ROM][ICS] MIUI XYZ bla bla bla 5% of the donations for MIUI team, 5% for XYZ, 5% for XDA :P
I hope my suggestion could be took by consideration, and any additional suggestion is welcomed!
We've tried to separate derivative ROMs in the past. It didn't go over very well to say the least. Any time a user copies another user's ROM or other work and doesn't offer credit to the original author, it is a kang, and it is against XDA's rules. Please report any threads you find like that. Copies of original work need permission from the originating author to be reproduced here. Remember that open source doesn't mean it's free to copy without consent. The original author still owns the work.
