Question Sony Ericsson HSD-DS970 vs Nokia HS-12W

Hello!
I want to buy one stereo BT headset for my Universal and I can' decide which one!
I'm considering on buying Sony Ericsson HSD-DS970, but I've seen that Nokia has HS-12W (with Radio builtin, which is great)!.
So, I want to know your opinion about both of them so I can decide!
I think the price is similiar, Is the sound similar also? What about BT connection good on both?? etc????
Please tell me what to do!

Thanks
Deiota

Deiota:
I have a Nokia HS-12W and i have to say that:

BT Connection - In the range of 1,5 m its very good. If you want more range forget it.

Sound Quality - very good, almost excelente. But its, for sure, one of his kind

Micro Quality - perfect.

Radio- A great plus.

Caller ID - A shame. It only shows the callers numer.

Remote controls - Woks fine

Battery - Weak. This is one the aquiles knees of the HS-12W. You can expect 6-8 hours of intensive use.

Material- Bulk, very good quality.

Overall: I'm very happy with HS-12W. The only issues i have is the battery time and the callers ID, but in general I'ts great (I use it every day)
And I do realy think (i had the same doubt that you have now) that its better that the Sony Ericsson HSD-DS970, because of Radio, Material and Sound Quality.

I'm having the SE HBH-DS970

Comparing spec-wise between the two

Nokia seems to have

a) longer battery life
b) a built-in radio
c) a built-in clip

but it's

a) unable to handle concurrent Bluetooth connections
b) unable to delete individual radio station

Both claim

a) can resume music playback after a call
b) ability to display caller name besides caller number

Well, Sony can't do it on my QTEK9000 aka Universal. I believe they'll work if they're use with their respective company products

Reviews of NOKIA HS-12W and SE HBH-DS970 are here:-

I think I'll get the NOKIA and have a try

For fixing/enabling the caller ID name issue, has anyone try this BT extension:

http://www.jetwaremobile.com

I believe the beta below is a newer version:

http://www.jetwaremobile.com/beta.html

Can you guys who own the Nokia headset try it out and report back if its showing the Caller ID name or not?

Thanks.

Default BT stereo comparison

I am using both BT on O2 Atom. In my opinion Sony sounds great and has better battery life. But it looses the BT pairing connection which Nokia doesnot. This is issue of BT version which your handset is using the O2 Atom is using BT v 1.2 which is the same as Nokia BT HS-12 headset version. On this Nokia BT head set resume after playback and everything works great. On sony intially pairing does work but after some idle time it looses its connection (This is because it uses BT v 2 that's why handshake problem). On both there is no name caller ID display only number. This is MS stack problem. So I suggest you should first check the BT version of the handset before deciding. I am also using Sony - Ericsso M600 and paired HBH-DS970 BT stereo to this handset where everything works great as desired. Absolutely no problem.

OK, here's my NOKIA HS-12W vs SE HBH-DS970 showdown!!!

Tested with QTEK 9000 (with the latest A2DP ROM) and Conduits Pocket Player v3.0 (with 'Resume playback after phone calls' feature enabled)

Size, Weight and appearance

Nokia is slightly larger and heavier than Sony. Sony is wholly plastic whereas Nokia is half metallic. Appearance-wise Sony is glossy black whereas Nokia is of metallic color due to the stainless steel top casing

Button convenience

Sony allows you to feel the button difference without looking at them. For Nokia you'll need see the buttons in order to see the function of the button. Nokia's keylock prevent accidental pressing of the wrong button

Neck Strap, clip, ear plugs/muffs and headset container

Nokia comes with a built-in clip whereas you have to get one separately for Sony. Sony comes with rubber-insert type ear plugs whereas Nokia comes with standard handphone earmuffs. Sony comes with a plastic container for its headset which is nice

Pairing and Profiles

Both pair equally fast. Sony comes only with 2 profiles : Wireless Stereo and Hands Free. Nokia comes with 3 profiles : Wireless Stereo, Hands Free and Headset

Audio

Loudness - With Conduits Pocket Player set to the maximum Nokia can be adjusted to give a much louder volume.

5m range detection - In open space both can play well without breaking up in music

Full Treble setting, Full Bass & Treble setting & Headphones setting - Nokia is slightly better than Sony in terms of treble, however, Sony's bass is slightly stronger

Music resume after a call - Not possible with Sony. You need to exit the player program (i.e. open my QTEK 9000) and then re-start Pocket Player and AVRCP controls will work. Alternatively, you can do a refresh to your bluetooth to achieve the same result. Possible with Nokia (no need to exit Pocket Player and re-start Pocket Player for it to play) but AVRCP controls not working anymore. You need to turn off Nokia and then turn-on to reconnect and AVRCP controls will work ok i.e. I don't need to open my QTEK 9000 as oppose to Sony

AVRCP controls

Both work with my QTEK 9000's lid OPEN and CLOSE without problem

Caller Name and Number Display

Both cannot display caller name, only caller number. JETware Handsfree Extension v1.11 does not work for both devices

Voice Dialing - For Nokia, its not available during a call or when you're listening to music or radio. With Sony you can dial out when listening to music

Battery Life

According to specs Nokia has about 8hrs of talktime and standby time of 200hrs. Sony has 4 - 6hrs of stereo playback. Don't trust Sony battery status display - the full charge keeps being shown on the display for about 60% of time, and then the rates decreases dramatically and the headset turns off.

Price

Nokia is slightly more expensive than Sony, about US$38 more

Major difference

Nokia works as a radio too but the stations cannot be individually deleted. Sony has multipoint bluetooth feature

Question Confused

HI!
Thanks for your review!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...s970+universal
Here you say that SE DS970 will show contact names with Jetware, right?
How is that???
I'mk pretty confuses at that point!
That's the main funcionality that makes me buy a headset (nokia or S). the display! If it doesnt show me contact names, perhaps I wont be biuing afterall!
The thing is, I get bored always opening my Universal (specially when it has a case on it!)!
The headset display will prevent fom doing it
Thanks
