Default new Gmail java applet

Noticed a little notice at the bottom of gmail mentioning that gmail is available on mobiles.

At first I thought it was the xhtml version of gmail we have all been using for a while but then I noticed the url was different:

mail.google.com/app

Turns out it's a midlet interface to gmail.... but it crashes on my HTC tytn.

Anyone else seen this or played around with it? I really wish I could see how good it is. I use gmail all the time.

There seems to be some info here: http://blog.outer-court.com/forum/74307.html

Maybe installing a different midlet manager might do the trick.
