Question Video Playback and general performace questions

How does the device perform with playback of a 40mb mpeg 1 video at 3-5min long? and also what is music palyback like. what is the wheel and trackball like, do they break easily or get dirty quickly? and, if there are any other performance related issues i should know about please say them here?, i have a free upgrade and was looking at this device or the xda zinc, read details on xda flame but donot know when it is released, im an o2uk customer in n.ireland

thanks in advance

I've only tried wmv file (320x240, Video data rate 230kbps, ~100MB) so far. Well, I was deeply dissappointed as the playback is extremely twitchy to the extent that watching it just doesn't make any sense. Having overclocked the device to 260MHz, I only achieved marginally acceptable playback quality, i.e. with some minor twitching left.
Actually, I have some development in the right direction. I re-encoded the original file using windows movie maker with its default settings 'Video for Pocket PC (Full screen 218 Kbps)'. Now the video plays back smoothly, however, the quality suffered just a tad (which is by no means irritating or distracting).

Thanks for the reply, has anyone else got any answers to the other questions, plus how does tcpmp work at playing video on it?

TCPMP's performance is dependent upon what you throw at it - this is true no matter what device you are using. In general it works fine with movies encoded for the PPC but will never perform like a 400 Mhz device.

The scroll wheel and trackball work fine as well. Again, depends on how hard you are using it - that is, the amount of dirt, etc. you expose it to. In 'normal' business & personal use, they have performed just fine in the few months I've had it. Trackball takes some getting used to though.

Hope this helps.
