Default WM6 ROM - Issues and compatibility list - please contribute...

Hi everybody,

I got quite annoyed by having to read several threads on the new WM6 ROM with the same newbie questions on and on. It blows the threads and makes it a neverending story to get the information most of us are looking for:

What are the issues with the new ROM - do the integrated apps and features work and which third party apps work

That's why I started this new thread! I already picked the information posted in the other threads - let's get together and post here answers (and please: NO newbie questions) to the above topics, so we don't have to read all the "Mum, I bricked my new toy!" stuff...

Here the infos I already found:

Issues with ROM/integrated apps/features:
  • no MMS, but ArcSoftMMS can be installed
  • camera app "hidden": copy file camera.lnk from /windows to /windows/start menu/programs (with Total Commander you will see it. Just view properties and uncheck "hidden")
  • you need AS 4.5 to sync
Apps that work:
  • wisbar advance 2.7.0.2
  • batterystatus 0.0.4.200 (apart from the signal strength)
  • phonealarm 1.58 full
  • todayagenda 0.9.22
  • total commander
  • aekmap
  • coolcamera (replacing the built-in one which is as previously
  • mentioned inside the /Windows folder)
  • oxios closeapps
  • wm5newmenu
  • WM5Torage
  • Smartskey
  • registry editor SEEMS to work havent had any crashes since i tweaked some things. It complains about it not being compatible but seems to do what its told.
  • Navizon
  • BT GPS (No GPS under Settings though)
  • SPB PocketPLus
  • SPB Backup
  • Arcsoft MMS
Apps that don't work:
  • slingplayer
  • xbar
Nokia 6110, Motorola TA180, Trium Mondo, Sony T610, HTC Feeler, Samsung D500, Nokia, N73, HTC Wizard, Samsung i900 Omnia, Blackberry Curve 8900, Samsung i9100 Galaxy 2, IPhone 4S

Cons:
- SLOWER than AKU 3.3
- Misses OmapClock
- Barebones
- Sounds are missing
- Bluetooth seems shaky
- Error reporting like XP (yuk)
- Too many nublets seem to be delving into this ROM, ROM feels tainted, takes shower and cries uncontrollably

Pros:
- Prettier than 3.3 (to some degree)
- Faster than stock
- GPS works flawlessly
- Exchange wizard on setup screens
- You can skip the stupid Dr meeting setup screen

All in all, it's in an infant state. Don't use it for production. Wait a few weeks and someone will cook up a masterpiece. If you have had the pleasure of seeing this ROM, you are looking at the canvas of one soon-to-be masterpiece. I bet you that the cooked ROM product to come out of this ROM will be the end-all...

- slower? i don't think so
- omapclock is a program developed by 3rd parts. Install it if you need it.
- barebones: that's true
- which sounds are you missing? Rings? Rings are not provided by MS. Install the rings you like if you want.
- Bluetooth: haven't tried it
- Error reporting: it was present in wm5 too. Disable it.
- ???

I agree and also raise:

- BT PAN (haven't tried it but it should be there)
- HTML Email
- Better designed Message application (accounts are more easily reached)
- different notification icons for text or email msgs
- Remote Desktop: much better than terminal services client
- Smartdial included in phone application. No more HTC's external smartdial app.
- Improved contacts application

I know this rom is not perfect/complete but it is really a gooooood starting point!

IMHO

I'm not sure about how internet calling works but i think it is somehow related to msn live services.

# camera app "hidden": copy file camera.lnk from /windows to /windows/start menu/programs (with Total Commander you will see it. Just view properties and uncheck "hidden")
Then reboot (reset will make camera visible in button settings)
After that you can assign "button 3" (the camera button) with the camera.lnk:
Settings>Buttons and select button 3 and point to "camera"

Now you can shoot your pictures

it's supposed to be a SIP standard client. unfortunately i don't have the rom installed so can't really help a lot - just google a bit on "SIP" and you will find out more...

Apps that work:
IGO 2006 (Beta 10-01-2007)
VJvolubilius
Mortscript
PHM tools
PocketPC Installer (Nice for experiments like this )

What doesn't work:
USING Pim.vol from older AKU (2.23 eg.) will cause contacts to die..

Regarding errors (reporting):
Just switch them off:
settings>system>error reporting
